Come on Now Smile!

One of the things people who only know me from the internet often think, or say to me via email, is that it seems as if I am serious all of the time. Truth is they do not know me all that well. I will admit that I take certain things seriously, I might even as some say, wear my emotions on my sleeve but that is not who I am in its entirety. In fact, I have a number of good friends, including at least one professional comic, who has encouraged me at times to go into comedy. I think for those that knew me in my youth, they would tell you I was the class clown. .

Christmas is a time of year, which despite the seriousness of it, and despite the high rate of depression, it is also brings about joy for some. I do not quite understand why there are the extremes of emotion, but I suspect there are legitimate theories. I expect part of it has to do with the focus on the commercial aspects of Christmas, the stress of finance and so forth.

Yesterday while at one of the local shopping establishments I heard several people talking on their cell phones. One in particular was talking to who I suspect was her husband, asking about charging on a credit card verses taking money out of savings. There was a present they wanted to buy a child but did not have the money to purchase it outside one of these two methods. This lady was in short, purchasing items she did not have money for. She ended up reasoning that she could spend it on the credit card, and then pay back the card, without interest with what they had anticipated getting from her husbands Christmas bonus. At this point, I could not help but think of Chevy Chase in A Christmas Vacation where he did not get the bonus he thought he was going to get. This family, like so many seemed to have their joy wrapped up in what they could buy for others.

I have to admit on this point; I have fallen into that same trap this Christmas. I have based my joy on the commercial aspects of Christmas. I need to be reminded as do we all, that our joy is not based on a material thing, but on a spiritual thing. God loved the world so much that he gave his only son to provide a way of salvation for us. The worlds focus on Christmas, either by Christians celebrating it or condemning it, and by non Christians focus on the holiday, tells us all there has to be something special about this day, about the birth of Jesus that makes the day special. I challenge it is that God would love us to the magnitude he did giving the ultimate gift. For those of us who know how bad we are, how undeserving we are of this type of love, we can find joy. In that joy comes laughter and celebration.

I challenge that today we look at the videos and recognize the laughter that can come about. There will be some that is reverent, some irreverent, but all with a focus on Christmas and the real reminder that Jesus can provide joy. There are some you can watch with your children, others you shouldn't let children see. This is a reminder that we can all find joy in our own way, we can all find ways to celebrate the truth of what Christmas is with others, in our own way. For those that aren't Christians, that is okay that you view and watch as well, but be careful about throwing all of the stiff, no sense of humor Christians in the same boat. Truth is, we aren't in the same boat, but the other truth is, we all have reason to celebrate and be thankful for the birth of Christ. Even if you don't believe in the party which we celebrate, thanks for coming along and doing what you do, that is if you observe Christmas in any way.

Now before we get to the videos, hopefully everyone will remember to pass the blogs along to your friends. The Christmas Special blogs from TVP can help a lot of people. The Virtual Pew News # 8 A Christmas Gift For You

This issue of The Virtual Pew News will be much shorter than usual. It will be shorter because I value your time during this busy time of year. I could say much about the happenings at The Virtual Pew, but will leave that for the future. I will say, the ministry and the effectiveness continue. The ministry continues as does the needs of this ministry. I continue to hear from individuals ranging from the non religious to pastors as to the impact this ministry is having. I know because of first hand experience with those receiving ministry. I also know our needs continue on in a greater way than ever before.

This issue is about giving back, giving back in such a way that shows to some extent the ministry of The Virtual Pew. This issue will also give back by providing you links that will help you reach out to your friends, family, coworkers and others with the message of Jesus Christ. This issue is unique, yet it has also proven to be effective in the work we are doing.

Since the first of December, I have been doing daily blogs that provides a brief, nonconfrontive devotional along with numerous videos. These are on various themes and all of the videos have a Christmas season focus. From Walt Disney to the Trans Siberian Orchestra, videos from YouTube have been used in these postings that have as of now been seen by hundreds of thousands on both MySpace and The Virtual Pew Blog sites.

There has also been the ongoing interaction with numerous individuals including interactions such as, a family with serious issues where divorce, and suicide prevention has been needed, troops in Iraq, and individuals struggling with alcoholism, and Christians facing issues of isolation from churches. We are still dealing with the real life, difficult situations that many face.

Prior to going on to the postings just an update to let you know that I am also providing the link to the previous newsletter which gave some giving updates for The Virtual Pew. Those giving needs are still present and while some has given to help provide gifts for others, we still have many others to provide assistance to. This weekend I am going to be distributing some clothes to the homeless in the Wichita area, and we have had money designated for the wrestling ministry we are involved in. Finances also took a hit as two paying jobs canceled this month, one wrestling related and another speaking related. Those things make it difficult, but we continue on.

I encourage you to visit the daily postings with The Virtual Pew at both MySpace and The Virtual Pew. You will see a much different layout with the pages at The Virtual Pew’s blog pages. One addition will be the addition of advertisements on the pages. We continue to seek ways to bring in additional funds so are trying the google addsense pages.

Enough for now, visit some of the links that are provided here. I think you will be pleased and see the type of ministry we are having. Until next time, here is our Christmas gift to you. Enjoy the hundreds of videos alongside messages surrounding the Christmas season.

To All of Those Visiting The Virtual Pew This Season
A Very Blessed Christmas from
The Furches Family
And
The Virtual Pew

A Country Christmas

I think every year I dream about spending Christmas in one of two locations. Either at the ocean with family, or better yet, in a small town, in a mountainous location with lots of snow and that Christmas spirit we see in the Rockwell tradition.

You know the photos of that tradition don't you, snow covered scenes, horse drawn carriages, and Christmas decorations every place you turn. I don't know why this appeals to me, but from the number of photographs, and movies where I have seen this scene, I know I am not the only one.

Despite the desire to see and spend Christmas in a location like this, I am reminded by the fact that Jesus was born in an inner city, among the poorest of the poor while his family was in Bethlehem filling out the census for the Roman Empire. That association with the city, and the poor would never leave Jesus.

Jesus had a deep appealing love for the city and the poor. In fact, the majority of his ministry was within this area. There are lessons we can learn from that association as we look at the birth of the Savior during this Holiday Season.

While we long to escape from the cities, and the turmoil of life to celebrate Christ's birth, there are many who will have no escape except for the seasonal meal or seasonal gift that someone or some organization may provide. The sad thing is, that for the majority of those living in poverty within the cities across America, Christmas ends on Christmas morning because the joyful spirit of giving is gone. Up next is a refocus on the new year and with that comes alcohol consumption and a refocus on the selfish nature that many have.

Yet, Jesus Christ lived a life among the people that many considered untouchable. He gave, and gave, and loved to the point of death. It is that Savior that came to be born as a babe, to give and love, even those who were considered by society as unlovable. He forwent personal pleasure to make sacrifice and offers of love.

What can we learn from the example of Jesus? I would hope that we all learn the importance of at least taking time to love those whom Jesus loved, not just at Christmas but all year round. To give and show what we consider love one time a year is in fact not love, it is a tease. This is a tease to the poor and needy that in reality does far more harm than good. If the intent of that one time a year gift is for good, rethink the position. Find a ministry like The Virtual Pew that attempts to do good. Realize though, that even here, we have our own specialized area. There are other ministries that do more in certain areas than we do. I say that because who you give to and who you support is among you and God. I will say though, that it isn't just money that organizations need, it is acts of service and volunteerism.

Today's videos are going to look at some of the old fashioned Christmas ideas that are associated with nature, i.e. location in particular. It may be a Yogi Bear Christmas because of the nature and mountains, it may be a song that brings back Christmas memories. In all of that though, reflect on the Christmases and birthdays that Jesus lived. Think about who he served, and then find a way to live that life and celebrate its meanings this Christmas

Christmas in a New Way with Trans Siberian Orchestra

I have to say, if there is any single thing I would really like to do in a selfish way this Christmas, it would be to take my wife to Kansas City or Oklahoma City to see this years production of A Trans Siberian Orchestra's Christmas. I love this group.

The Trans Siberian Orchestra reminds me a great deal of one of my favorite bands of all time, The Electric Light Orchestra, or ELO as many came to know them by. They have also been compared to Pink Floyd but I personally believe the ELO association is more accurate. They do an wonderful job of mixing rock guitar alongside of orchestration to bring about a wonderful blend of music and emotion. Their extravagant stage productions makes one think of the ELO days when they would do concerts on a stage that resembled a UFO. TSO likely also has the most elaborate lighting show in music today.

One of the things that impress me about Trans Siberian Orchestra is their refusal to compromise on all aspects of the music they perform. As a result, they are booked pretty much solid, everyday, from the first of November to the first of January with the exception of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. On several of those days they do 2 or more concerts. The lavish stage production shows the understanding of pleasing the eye. The wonderful production show an understanding of pleasing the ear, and the wonderful recognition of the old hymns and modern adaptations show an understanding of the true meaning of Christmas.

While there is much that can be appreciated by their uncompromising Christmas Spirit, there is also much that can be learned for our own life lessons. Neither should we be willing to compromise the integrity of the message of what Christmas is all about. We need to recognize the liberty we have in finding new ways, to celebrate old themes. The themes and messages of Christmas still have relevancy, although, sometimes, we have to put old wine into new wine skins to get people to have an appreciation of what some of those old things say. I do not think I will ever forget the guy who told me he had heard this great new song called The First Noel. While hearing a new rendition of the old song, he did not realize the song was old. Trans Siberian Orchestra has shown us we as well can find new ways to let others know about old messages.

Like I said earlier, if I could have one selfish gift this year, attending their concert with my wife in Kansas City or Oklahoma City would be it. Since that isn’t likely going to happen because I don't have the $125 for tickets I have had to settle for some of the wonderful videos and songs on YouTube. I also got to tape on the DVR the Christmas Special being featured on PBS this month. My wife hadn't heard of the band, so I will assume some of you have not either. Watch the videos that follow The Virtual Pew giving and posting information and see for yourself what I am talking about. I don't think you will be disappointed. You may have heard them and did not realize it.

On a side note, be patient for the Ultimate Christmas Blog with videos. There are many videos available in the archives here and I encourage you to visit them and take a look. There are many more to go, and I am still working on the ultimate blog. I am going to take a little time off today, enjoy a little break, and do some work at the house. So they won't be up today, but I think I will have the ultimate blog up by the weekend. Right now I have over a hundred videos up linked and ready to go, and another 100+ to get ready.

Approaching a Milestone

Approximately 9 months ago I, and The Virtual Pew decided to test market The Virtual Pew concept at MySpace. At the time I was still pastor of a church, but knew I would be leaving and going out on my own. What transpired has been surprisingly effective. I realized this morning we are approaching a milestone in our involvement at MySpace. We currently have 98 blogs, and 903 friends on our MySpace friends list. Which will come first, 1,000 friends or 100 blogs? I know MySpace has proven to be an effective ministry, and outreach.

Currently, I provide some level of counsel ranging on a variety of subjects to a minimum, of 5 to as many as 27 each day. On average we provide some level of counseling to individuals on a variety of subjects, from wrestling to marriage problems, and from drug addictions to homelessness on an average of 12 per day. That does not take into consideration just being friends and communicating with people. The Virtual Pew has provided financial assistance to individuals as well, although not as much as we would like due to the lack of income over the last year. There is also an application process we require before providing assistance and there have been several requesting assistance that didn't apply, along with some who didn't because at the time of their request, we just didn't have money available. None of that though, even with some of the minimum disappointments can take away from the work and progress we have seen.

Now as to why I consider the work done here, as being done by us/we, instead of me. I say that because I am aware of those who have supported The Virtual Pew from a financial perspective, and the many others that have supported it with prayer. There are the referrals that have been made to individual ministries and individuals as well as even some of the bands like Benny Logos and others that have given their music to be used by The Virtual Pew in our worship boards and web site at www.thevirtualpew.com . The truth is, from forum moderators at our message boards where we now have over 100 members, and literally close to 1,000,000 hits and the Hollywood Jesus and Virtual Pew Blog pages where we have had literally millions of visits over the last year, those things don't happen with me, they happen with we.

The objective was to have the majority of kinks worked out by the end of the first year, we are going to obtain that goal. The goal of reaching the number of people, with real ministry, has already been exceeded for the first year. In fact, the ministry of helping, serving, caring and loving, The Lost, The Last, and The Least has far exceeded our first year expectations. The future in regards to ministry looks incredible. It looks incredible because the ministry we do, is to individuals who have either felt or have been neglected by the "typical" church. In fact, there has been tremendous ministry to those who have no church affiliation, and those who have neglected church teachings and belief. Our hope was to be a light in a dark world, and for some we have shone brightly. I could not be more pleased at how God has used this ministry to help others.

On the other hand, we have had disappointments. The largest disappointment has been in the number of churches willing support The Virtual Pew. I would love to see The Virtual Pew earn its way. In order to do that, I have to get into churches and businesses to speak. I still need, someone to book me for those speaking opportunities. The references, the feedback from churches and businesses where I have spoken have been tremendous. Some have complimented my ability to communicate via these boards, but I must tell you, I have far more confidence and belief in my ability via the spoken word, in live situations. Again the feedback and recommendations have given verification to that point.

I have been a little surprised at the lack of financial giving from individuals accessing The Virtual Pew. It is not that I am disappointed in those individuals, it is that my calculations were off because a lack of understanding of the financial status of those we are providing ministry to. The overwhelming majority of individuals we provide some level of ministry to, just don't have the finances to support our work. The other truth though, is some who do, for whatever reason hasn't. Bottom line, is that a major reassessment of financial needs will have to be taken into consideration over the course of the next year. As a part of that consideration will be my own need to bring in outside dollars from additional jobs until we can get financially stable enough to continue this full-time unless serious contributions and engagments come in before the end of the year. The Virtual Pew has been a full-time effort for close to 7 months. We expected it to take about a year to get to the place where the income needed would start to come in. In that process I didn't figure in the need to get someone booking me, and the financial status of those we minister to. for that reason it has made the financial end of things difficult to say the least.

The other disappointment was the promise, and then pulling away regarding the editing and promotion of my book. I realize the need to have someone who cherishes this ministry enough to help support it, including scheduling of speaking opportunities, and helping shop the book. Many have stated that the book is the key to some of the speaking opportunities. If half of the expectations are true about the book, as expressed by others, it will be the single thing that opens up this ministry. I do have an editor willing to do the edit on the book for $1,000 but need a backer or bakers to finance that expense.

In some ways, the difficulties present a catch 22. I need one thing in order to get the other. I realize the importance of the mechanics. I also realize the need of counseling and help of those in need. For me to take additional time to address one need, I find myself having to take time away from people who need the help, advice and counsel. Just yesterday, I spent about 3 hours with an individual going to Iraq in January. He is concerned about his wife leaving him, taking his children and the suicidal tendencies of one of his children because of their own inability to get along with their mother. I have offered services to the family, and even offered to be a landing place for the child who may need a place to live in the next months. I have to evaluate, what is more important, the many individuals similar to this man requesting help on a daily basis, or the need to constantly book myself out for pay. I understand now, more than ever, Paul's own need to balance his tent making, (job) alongside his ministry, (evangelism, planting churches). I also realize that Paul had people supporting what he was doing. I also realize the need for a ministry like The Virtual Pew, to have individuals supporting it in that way as well. We need supporters to help with the work, financial supporters to help allow a time for ministry, and some dedicated individuals willing to work on the booking and promotion end of the ministry. Those helps will allow the ministry that is currently exisiting to grow, and expand even larger and more effective than it presently is.

How has the time over the last months been? Incredible! Are there any regrets? Not really. When balancing out ministry with money, I'll take ministry every time. I wll take ministry, because ministry to The Virtual Pew involves people who do not see that kind of help and love from the church and/or majority of Christians. I am unapologetic that our desire is to love people into relationship with Jesus Christ. I am sure there is value in the hard core preachers who preach the hell fire message and the churches who do the work they do. I will not question the methods God uses with who ever he chooses. I can only question and search the methods God desires for me. In that regard, I know The Virtual Pew has been used by God in the last year. What is in store for tomorrow, and the next year? I do not know! I do know I will be seeking God's direction at making sure that what we do, grows, and maintains its effectiveness. I will make sure we continue to reach out via acts of love, service, and help, for The Lost, The Last, The Least, which include the ones often feeling neglected by the church, the homeless person sleeping in an alley, and the drug addict who has lost their family, among others. Why will we do this? Because I know God has honored my prayer of years ago, that if given the opportunity, I wanted to make sure I had the chance to minister to people who were just like I was before I was a follower of Jesus. I have given up the "American Dream" of notoriety, income, wealth, and respect to do this. I am poor again, now have almost nothing again. I know I could go back to my life of wealth and recognition tomorrow. That being said, I would rather be known as the person who followed their dreams of loving the unlovable, and making a difference in the lives of those they came into contact with. I would rather be obedient to God's call, than have all the wealth on this planet. Why? Because my treasures are not here, my treasures are in Heaven. I get a glimpse of those treasures by being involved in the lives of those I have the joy, honor and privilege of meeting on MySpace, The Virtual Pew, and other places where a friend should be more than just a picture in a profile. For many, you know that for me this concept is true.

Blessings and thanks for helping The Virtual Pew and taking part in the MySpace page milestones. We still have about 3 months to go to hit our 1 year anniversary on MySpace, and about 5 months to go to get to the 1 year anniversary of full-time service with The Virtual Pew. I can tell , the ride has been great and is only going to get better. Get on board and see the impact you can have. It is a great ride.

Christmas, Not Just For Kids

I think the older I get, the more I enjoy Christmas. Just last night I watched the Trans Siberian Orchestra Christmas Special. I have also been setting the DVR to catch as many Christmas Specials as I can. I enjoy the giving, and I have to admit, I still enjoy the occasional getting although not always material things. I enjoy getting little things, like someone saying they are praying for me, someone telling me they are supporting a form of ministry I do, or even something like my daughter got me last Christmas, two goats to help a family in a third world country. Yep, those types of things I still enjoy getting.

One of my favorite Christmas shows is A Christmas Story, you know the story of the little boy named Ralphie who wants a Red Ryder BB Gun for Christmas. I love it because I can imagine what it is like to want something so badly for Christmas. I never knew that so much as a child, but I have had the joy of seeing it for my children. In fact, every Christmas is mixed with an abundance of gifts, and a message regarding service and loving others less fortunate.

My daughter has learned those lessons well as is exhibited in her and her husbands' gift to me last year. This year I requested they purchase for me the removal or cover up of tattoos of gang members. A wonderful gift provided by Mennonite Central Committee. There were other things, things like a gift to The Virtual Pew to help the church in Lahore Pakistan. Those types of things still excite me.

My son on the other hand, while just turning 17, has moved away from the toys and games, and now wants electronics and clothes. He has not gotten to the place where he understands the accumulation of junk, even after moving a ton of junk from a larger house to a smaller house, but he is getting there. That is okay, he is not quite to the point yet, but he has an understanding of his needs to give to those less fortunate. He will go with me next week to give clothes and needed items to the homeless here in Wichita.

My son and daughter have learned the benefits, and yes, even dangers of helping those less fortunate. For my wife and son, we will learn more this Christmas about less is more but that does not change the point that Christmas is not just for kids. It is for everyone.

As we enter Christmas, we can get all uptight about the materialistic nature of it. I would challenge to let it go and realize kids are kids. Jesus wanted to reward kids and saw kids as special. He had such a love for them. Jesus went so far to tell us we must become like children if we want to see Heaven.

There is nothing wrong with getting excited about Christmas, nothing wrong with wanting gifts, nothing wrong with wanting to give, nothing wrong with celebrating in full-force. The issue becomes in what ways we do that. Can you get as excited about the gift of a goat to someone in need in a third world country as you can about the newest PS3 system? How about as excited about having someone give a homeless man a coat in your honor as opposed to the receipt of a new coat for yourself? When you can get to those places, you find the wonderful place where being a kid at Christmas blends with being an adult. It is not such a bad place.

In recognition of that, and that I started work this morning at 2:50 AM due to going to a wrestling tournament today, I am featuring some children series videos this morning. There are some old cartoons and fun things the kids will enjoy. Here is my challenge to you, sit down, watch at least one of these in its entirety with a child, if not a child around you, send it to a relative or a friend with children so their parents can do it with their kids. Then think, reflect, on your child's attitude this Christmas. Think of how Jesus wants to bless children, and think of what ways are you like a child? What types of gifts could you get that would honor you, while at the same time show love to others? Then as you think on those things, act on them. Let others know to give a gift to The Virtual Pew so they can take a needy child to the movies or sponsor a child through Compassion International. Do something like the above, while we would appreciate the gift, do not take this the wrong way, it does not have to be our ministry, it could be any ministry that does good work. It might not even be a ministry, it could be someone volunteering to pick up trash in a local park in your honor, or taking $10 to the local homeless shelter, it could be a variety of things, the sky is the limit. Now that type of giving is special. Of course the things we do at The Virtual Pew really excites me, but I do not expect those types of things to excite everyone.

Those Darned Christmas Carols

I often find myself torn between what style of music I listen to. I tend to be more of a Rock N Roll guy but find myself at times enjoying older styles of music. It is likely true for most of us to one extent or another to enjoy different styles of music. Of course, when it comes to church music we open up a can or worms. Truth is, most people simply don't like what is considered traditional church music. Or can they and just don't realize it?

I challenge that most of us, especially during this time of year are more flexible than we realize. My point is the acceptance of old Christmas tunes, which are nothing more than traditional church hymns. I have a number of friends who are not religious or practice any faith at all, some are Atheists. Yet, on this issue, I am surprised at how many Atheists and non religious friends I have who enjoy Christmas. Most, even go as far as tell me how much they enjoy Christmas Carols during the holiday season for the peaceful and loving message they give. We are all eclectic even if those tastes present something that does not always agree with us.

This Christmas, I challenge each person to listen to the words of the Christmas carols. While some were be written during a time they used language we don't understand, I challenge it is worth a little searching to discover the meaning of those songs, and the intent of their writers. Two years ago I did this for John Newton, the author of the song Amazing Grace. What I found out about his life was amazing and I can not help but think of his life when hearing Amazing Grace. I dedicated my wife's video of Amazing Grace to the memory of John Newton. I am certain we can find similar stories in the authors of the carols.

While some carols are done in a different way, with different arraignments, the words are still the same. O Come All Yea Faithful has the same intent if sung by Twisted Sister, or Johnny Cash. Their interpretation may vary but the words are consistent to praise the birth of Jesus, and the need to worship him.

While I will not be posting all of the carols on this blog, I will be posting a good number of them. Go back over the last days and weeks to find other carols on other blogs. Of course I will try to put all of the videos on one super blog in the next few days. Hopefully everyone has been enjoying the blogs and sharing them with your friends and family.

Now to the ads for The Virtual Pew; if you have seen these, feel free to scroll on down to the videos to enjoy. Of course we appreciate all of the support, and appreciate the time it takes to go through these; hopefully they bless you and help provide a more enjoyable Christmas season for you.
