Daily Devotional: Genesis Chapter 7, 8 - God Loves The Animals

Daily Devotional, Genesis Chapter 7, 8
An often unspoken lesson from Noah's Ark

Noah's Ark is one of the most debated concepts of the Bible. Did it happen or did it not?  There are all kinds of beliefs and serious conversations about these two chapters.  Here is a point I will bring out, there are flood stories in virtually every religion.  That gives for me, credence that a flood happened. I take the Bible for it's word here, and I realize that is a measure of faith but I also believe there is evidence of the flood. Now I won't debate that in a devotional, but there is a point I want to bring out after this mornings reading.

In today's world it seems as there are so many varying views of faith, unfortunately one of those aligns itself with a focus that seems to be more on politics, which can include varying concepts that may or may not be Biblical, and others that keep a focus on Biblical concepts. There is a concept here that aligns with what is often called The Creation Mandate. That is; God cares about our planet as well as his creation, including the animals.

Think about it, we see clearly here, that God cared enough about the animal kingdom in this passage that he made sure to include two of every species to come onto the ark to maintain the animal kingdom. God also cares about the creatures that roam the earth.

I see how people often treat animals and unfortunately there are far too many that mistreat and abuse the animals on this planet. Now don't get me wrong, I'm a meat eater, I'm so far from a PETA type of thing it is ridiculous. I am saying though, do we have compassion for animals, the way they are treated, the way they are raised. God does. I challenge, that today, think about loving the whole of the planet, including animals in the same way that God did in seeing to it that the animal species survived. In a world where animals are becoming extinct, we should care.

Becoming Friends With Him And Them

www.thevirtualpew.com
One of the things that sometimes surprises those getting to know me is the studies I was involved in while in college. My majors are around the areas of Psychology, Human Services, Church Ministries and believe it or not, Philosophy. It is the area of Philosophy I find myself using many of the things I learned, especially logic and reasoning.

Many know I do a regular teaching whether at church, online, in my writings, or other settings. Many may not realize the number of times I personally contemplate on those teachings, thinking about how to apply them in and to my life. Many teachers and speakers will tell you, especially on matters of faith, that their teachings often apply to the teacher more than the student. While a teaching can have specific meaning for the teacher, it is likely a listener is in the same boat as the teacher and needs the teaching.

This last weekend I taught on the concept that God chooses to be our friend. I used the following passage:

John 15 - (13) The greatest way to show love for friends is to die for them. (14) And you are my friends, if you obey me. (15) Servants don’t know what their master is doing, and so I don’t speak to you as my servants. I speak to you as my friends, and I have told you everything that my Father has told me.

I want to share a few brief points:

1st, God wants to be our friend, but there are conditions to that friendship. Verse 15 gives clear indication that we have to obey.

The bible is full of instruction, one of the benefits of the church is that appropriate instruction should be given. Remember, the role of a pastor is to teach and equip others to observe the instructions from the ultimate love letter and instruction manual, the bible.

We all have friends and family, Christ gave the clear example of how to display love, to the point that he:

2ndly, Gave the example of what it meant to literally love so much that one is willing to lay down
their life for another.

www.thevirtualpew.comThe truth is, many of us have friends and family we deeply love, whether it be a best friend we have had since high school, a brother, sister, son, daughter, mother, father, and you likely get my point. Let me ask a simple question, if we haven't experienced the ultimate and best friendship and love possible, the perfect friendship and love if you will, if we don't observe and obey and take part in the instruction of scripture, the aspect of sharing in life with others who have learned this concept, how is one to expect to be the best friend, providing the best love possible to those around them, whether, a best friend from years gone by, or a family member, brother, sister, son, daughter, mother, father, and you likely get my point?

Today, I want to challenge you, not to be just a so called friend, but instead, be a real friend, whether a Facebook friend or a real life honest to goodness friend from years gone by or a family member, brother, sister, son, daughter, mother, father, and you likely get my point, friend.

Discover ways to access appropriate teachings, dedicate yourself to be the best you can be from academics, teaching received at church, then go into your practicum of becoming a good friend using those examples, then, graduate to the place where you are using those examples, teaching those you love about ultimate friendship and love and the best and perfect example, Jesus.

As a footnote let me say, unfortunately a lot of churches don't practice this concept of loving each other as they should. Keep looking if having trouble finding one. I also know this, fortunately, there are those good teachers, consistent with the teachings of scripture, putting into practice, that ultimate example of love and friendship, initially displayed and still given by that perfect love and example, Jesus.

Good luck, carry on, and love.

A great song on the area of friendship. To see and hear the song, just click on the video, if there is trouble, try the following link:

When A Homeless Man Worships

For those that don’t know, not only am I the pastor of The Virtual Pew, but I am also the pastor of a brick and mortar church named Mosaic in Wichita Kansas. We meet in the heart of downtown Wichita, a location we moved to for various reasons including, the desire to reach the arts community, to be in the heart of the city to have an impact on the city, including all of those in the area, but to also carry out what we believe to be a huge part of the mission of Jesus, serving the homeless and the poor. We located to a place one block from our cities largest homeless gathering, the downtown public library. We eventually want to be open every day to serve the homeless but for now we are progressing appropriately and as God provides, that said, something special happened yesterday.

One of the things I do for myself, (yes there is selfish intent although I am willing to share) is to play bass guitar on the worship team. Now don’t get me wrong here, even though I am the pastor, (we are all ministers, some are pastors and I am the senior pastor at Mosaic) I still submit to the leadership of our worship pastor, Chris Marshall, when playing music. Chris has shown tremendous leadership and the ability to be used by God. He seems to always review my sermons, and seek the guidance from God as to the songs to be used in the service. He has a great way of adapting some of the old hymns that we use as we pay honor to the past, and find newer songs to use for the bulk of worship. He has even adapted some popular non church songs and found ways to use them in church. I especially like the Zydeco styled worship tunes he comes up with at times, especially using some of those old hymns.

Yesterday was a special day. It was the first day where I had made a minor effort to reach out to some of the downtown homeless community. We are doing this gradually as we make sure we have the appropriate help and funds in place. I have gladly offered my salary back to the church so we can be in the place we are to minister. My heart was paid back so much more yesterday as we had our first pot-luck meal and homeless folks among other guest in attendance. It was great to see everyone, from old friends; to new friends, we were there to serve but we were also served by those there.

As we concluded worship we played the song, How Great Thou Art. Most folks had been standing for the duration of our worship service. We had a time where folks could sit prior to our last song as we took some prayer requests. We started playing again and as I looked out over the gathering, after about the 2nd verse of How Great Thou Art, I noticed one of the homeless guys near the back, standing, eyes closed, worshiping God as he sang the memorized lyrics to the song. I was moved to a point that I was able to worship. I have had a little while to think about it, I have concluded; God will use us in ways we never expected if we allow him. We often make excuses to not come to the place of allowing God to live and breathe through us. This guy though, who seemingly had nothing, has a relationship with God that inspired me, and I believe, others.

Sometimes, when we come to a place of surrender and acceptance, God will do incredible things, with, for, and through us. There comes a point though that we have to surrender, and accept the things God has for us. The question I have been challenged with is this, if a homeless guy, having no place to lay his head, who has only the clothes on his back, can come to a place of bringing honor and sincere worship to God, what is my excuse? One of the beautiful things of doing the ministry work I do is this isn’t just words on a computer screen I have typed, it is a real, honest to goodness life observation. I am reminded of the words of Larry Norman in one of his songs; “We can’t see nothing if we close our eyes.” At Mosaic I pray God gives us ears to hear what the Spirit would say to our church, from now on, I will also pray God gives us eyes to see. I would love to see others opening up their eyes and in the process be moved and motivated to love God more. When we are around those who are hurting, I think we will see them inclined to not blame God so much. We may see their desire to seek God from their knees. May we all come to that place with a willingness to be on our knees when we seek to serve and live in the presence of a Holy God no matter how much we have, or not. In our weakness, we will discover, and experience God’s strength. It is my desire to experience that more, not less; I also realize it is a valuable gift that one with little gave to me. May I in return at least have the desire, ability, and will to offer love and while Silver and Gold have I none, I will realize, the gift of Jesus is far more valuable.

An Alaskan Affair, A Short Story by Mike Furches

Charles was walking alone across the open tundra. He realized he was on ice. The vastness of the open sea pulled him. All around him he saw the mountains and their peaks covered or tipped with snow. They reached as high and as far as the eye could see, to the endless vastness of the sky and the borders of heaven.

As the sun shined on the peaks Charles saw the reflections of the shadows mixed with the glistening of the snow. The dull gray rocks seemed small, but Charles knew they were really quite large. He was after all, at least three miles from the nearest mountain and there were other mountains as far as the eye could see in all directions.

In the simplicity of the grayness of the rocks, Charles was amazed how much color the color of gray possessed. There were many tints, all of them seeming all the brighter and more brilliant next to the contrast of the white snow. There were blue tints; light and dark tints, as well as shades of brown and green. All of these colors, and more, positioned against a backdrop of deep royal blue sky sprinkled with white silky and fluffy clouds. All in all, it was a beautiful day.

Charles didn't know what it was that was driving him on in this course. He had a family back home that he deeply cared about, especially his three daughters. Charles could only think of enjoyable memories when it came to his children. They were and would always be mystically linked to him. He knew they were a part of him. They came from his roots and lineage, a part of the continuation of his soul and spirit. His children were something he had tried to cultivate in appropriate ways. Ways where they would be successful when they were grown. Success for his daughters would come from places other than wealth. It would come from relationships, family and morality. Charles wanted richness in the pleasures of life. He wanted wealth from the security of being involved in something where his children would leave their mark on those around them for an eternity.

Charles was growing further apart from his wife but he tried to keep their marriage together. As they grew older they were unlike some couples who grew more in love and found out how much they had in common. Charles realized how they were different. While raising the children Charles knew his wife had been a good mother. He was grateful for her.

Charles had not changed much since the wedding. He remained in many ways the kid he was while growing up. There were the simple and small ways his wife had changed. She didn’t take the time to care for herself like she once did. This impacted her physical appearance and her emotional makeup. Charles wasn't mad at her; he just realized how they had grown apart.

After arguments with his wife, Charles often took long walks to reflect on his life and to calm down. He was having an affair with the surroundings he had grown to love, the beautiful terrain of Alaska. He occasionally left home for long walks that lasted the day. His wife and children never understood or accepted him doing this. His family knew he was so caught up in his work through the week that he often times didn’t get home until late. His family just wanted him to spend more time with them.

Several times a week Charles went to the local pub to spend time with friends. He never drank alcoholic beverages, just coke or water. Going to the pub was a way of relaxing and spending time with his friends. It was a way of relaxing he had never experienced with his wife. This was something his wife never understood or accepted.

As Charles continued walking he got lost in the beauty of his surroundings. He accepted that he was enjoying the privacy and beauty of his surroundings more than he did his time at home. Here, there was no arguing, unless he decided to let loose and argue with God. This was a rewarding experience though, it was from the occasional arguments with God that he seemed to understand himself and God better. Charles had friends that knew him well and warned him about the dangers of taking his long walks without letting anyone know of his whereabouts. Alaska was still a wilderness and she possessed attributes that made her so.

The mountains and snows were unpredictable. There was the animals and ice. Animals got hungry and bears, especially if awakening during the spring hibernation, were known to stalk humans. One of the greatest dangers was the enormity of the lakes and seas. They would freeze in the winter and form barren tundra of frozen ground. The ice was so thick in some sections that large semi trucks drove over the ice to deliver items to various locations.

As thick as the ice got, in the spring it would began to thaw and often times took to the grave those on it at the time it broke apart. Charles reasoned with his friends that none of them knew the circumstances he was going through at home nor of the confusion he was constantly going through in his own mind. To him, this was a justification that blinded him to the reasoning presented by others.

Charles never got over being raised in the environment he was. He was raised in the country, the child of a farming family. This was difficult not just on Charles, but on every family and child growing up on a farm. The 1970's were rough and the grain embargo years of President Carter didn't help. Seeing families loose everything they had worked so hard for made it difficult for Charles’ mother and father. Eventually, the hard times hit home. When Charles grandfather and grandmother lost their farm of over 50 years Charles father started drinking and the alcohol shortened an already short temper. It was his observations of this that kept Charles from consuming alcohol throughout his adult life.

The years preceding the loss of the family farm took the greatest toll on Charles family. Charles did his best to lead a advantageous life, but there was the nightmares and flashbacks that shocked the past memories into the present. The nightmares had vivid images of his mothers and fathers last years together. Years of arguing, fighting, and taking the anger out on the children. The children were never physically abused but the spankings came more often and for things not always their fought.

It was not the recollection of these memories that Charles was having nightmares about. It was the time he walked in and found his father dead from a self inflicted gunshot wound. It was after this brutal discovery Charles mother moved to Des Moines. Des Moines wasn't a large city to most but to Charles, after growing up in the country it was as if he was visiting another planet. Charles was never willing to put the blame on anyone else other than himself. "Each person is responsible for their actions." He told his friends while discussing various topics after work at the pub. This opinion not only helped develop bar room friendships but it was a philosophy Charles accepted and believed. It was an idea that was rural America and a part of Charles most essential roots.

For a moment Charles was frightened and realized he was daydreaming again. On occasion he walked for miles just thinking and daydreaming. It was as if he was not aware of his surroundings.

It was the roar of a falling glacier, which awoke him from his stupor. A glacier had shifted and caused a small avalanche some ten miles away. He saw the powder starting to cascade down the mountain, growing in size as it fell down the steep frozen and sterile mountain. The snow was starting to melt now and as it melted the glaciers often shifted, and fell. They sounded like a loud, constant, thunder clasp. Even though Charles was a safe distance from the tons of falling snow, he could still distinguish the thunderous sound heard from miles away The avalanche momentarily took his attention away from the struggles he was going through regarding his relationship with his family, wife, and friends, but mostly with himself.

Charles watched the avalanche in the distance for what seemed like hours but it could not have lasted more than three minuets. It was here that Charles took a break and looked at the beautiful clouds. He could see many reflections and shapes as the sunlight shone through the clouds. It was as if God was using his fingers to point rays of light to the earth, highlighting points of the mountain and ice covered sea around him.

Charles lay down and looked at the large white delicate clouds and the designs. He recalled his childhood were he did the same thing in the fields of Iowa. It was there where Charles was taught by his father to use his imagination to distinguish various shapes and objects in the cloud formations. It was amazing to Charles, even as an adult, how imaginative the mind was and how it could be told something existed that was not in reality there. He knew for example that one of the clouds he was looking at could not be mans' profile, yet, he could convince his mind that what he saw was the profile of an elderly man.

The ice Charles lay on did not feel cold due to the down jacket he was wearing. It was a jacket his grandmother gave him when he had left Iowa to go to college in Wyoming. It was one of the last things his grandmother gave him before she died of a heart attack during his freshman year while on Christmas break. Charles was pleased that he had not grown much since college. He was now 38-years-old and out of college for 15 years. If anything, he was pleased that he was in many ways, in better shape now than he was then. While in high school and later on in college he was not that active. He concentrated mainly on his studies in agriculture. It was later, after realizing he would never make a decent living farming that he changed his area of studies to finance. After college he started taking long walks to get into shape.

While watching the clouds Charles closed his eyes and thought of some of the pleasant times he had had with his grandmother while growing up. He thought of the times when everyone in the family got together after church for dinner. They would watch the Bears of Chiefs play football on television. While Charles was not athletic it was fun having the men of the house enjoying the game and getting into ritualistic arguments about who the best players were in the history of the game. He recalled the fine meals his grandmother always prepared. There was always more food than they could eat during lunch but after snacking through the day there was never any left by the time the second televised game of the day was over.

On occasion He remembered his dreams but on others had no idea what he had dreamed. On this occasion he could not remember his dreams but knew he had a good nap by the way he felt. He felt good and started walking again. He could walk for another hour or so and still have time to get home to his family before dark. He was 15 miles from home and he had almost 5 hours to get to his jeep which was parked at the edge of the park. This was important even though it was early in the spring. The bears were still in the lowlands looking for food and it could get down to 20 below zero.

At times like this Charles realized how much he loved his surroundings. There was the mountains, sky, he even enjoyed in its own strange sort of way, the weather. It was also at these times that he didn't want to hear his wife complaining about taking a full day on the weekend to spend time alone, walking. It wasn't that she didn't want him doing the things he enjoyed. She just didn't understand the need for him to be alone or away from the family during his free time. He did this without letting them know where he was at.

To Charles, the mountains and spring of the year in Alaska was as if he were having an affair with a woman he deeply loved. He loved her aroma and never tired of looking at her. He remembered every little detail. There was her body, the curve of eyelashes, the darkness of her eyes and the small blemishes which were not really blemishes but small details to accent her overall beauty. He could be in her presence for an eternity, never wanting anything more than her companionship and the fullness of a conversation dipped in romance. To touch and caress while in conversation about anything from a movie to the way one felt about the other. Any conversation would be an easy conversation because it was not so much the subject matter of the conversation as much as it was the joy that came from being in her presence. Naturally, if on occasion more were to happen, then that would be something beautiful and enjoyed to the fullness of which God intended. Yet it would not be any one thing which would be the basis of the relationship but instead the magic of everything combined.

Charles felt all of these feelings about Alaska, yet, in the manner that resembled an affair. It was an affair which took from one aspect of Charles’ life in order to give to the other. This affair at times had him questioning, what, and who were right, and what, and who, were wrong. It was an affair were the love of youth had been lost to a new love of vigilance and challenge. Was one right while the other wrong? Charles didn't think so. He knew how he felt about his surroundings; he knew how he felt about his life and family. He didn't fully accept what others thought as right or wrong. He saw and lived life through his own perspective. He needed time to follow his own heart.

The spring was a time of growth and change; one never knew what would happen. For Charles, this lack of understanding was one of the beautiful things about Alaska. There were other things he loved and were drawn into. It was not unusual to see animals come out of hibernation. He could sit at a distance and watch the games of flirtation with the birds, bears, foxes and other animals that played with each other. The games of flirtation were in a good, clean, decent, sincerely pure way, as romantic as anything Charles had experienced for many years. He had the joy of seeing Gods creation at work and the joy and pleasure those things bought him were worth the risks he took. For Charles, to see nature replenish itself and go through the ceremonies and rituals of spring were a spiritually uplifting thing. To realize, that creation renews, forgives and seemingly forgets was a message which Charles needed.

Charles thought that the risk he was taking was something God wanted for him. This involved the risk of taking the long walks in environments where others did not know where he was. To others, it was as if reason had been lost. To Charles, reason was not lost, he knew he had a family and a responsibility to that family, yet, he also knew how much joy and pleasure the walks and time alone brought him. He was convinced; this could not be bad. Observing the beauty of Gods creation was something others should understand. To Charles it was not so much that he had changed over the years; his family had changed.

In the early days, Charles and his wife did things together; they loved the company they kept with each other. They took long walks and were involved in all types of activities. Yet, for a number of reasons, some his fault, he had become bitter towards those around him for not trying to understand him or his past. He blamed everyone but himself for the disintegration of their relationships, and he was tired of the confrontations. He was going to live his life, to the fullest and most satisfying way possible.

Charles had been daydreaming as he walked across the ice. He was now wide awake, it was starting to get cool, but he was within site of his jeep, some mile or so away. He was now whistling away the tune of Mr. Blue Sky by The Electric Light Orchestra. He was thinking about how beautiful it was, and how it was nice that it was starting to warm up. It wasn’t as cold as he had expected and he was looking forward to the spring and warm weather. As he walked across the frozen lake he began to feel and hear the ice beneath him began to crack, and break.

The Virtual Pew News 21: Visit Those in Prison

Today I am back on my regular routine, a lot has happened and this copy of The Virtual Pew Newsletter will have a lot of things to address, I hope and pray you take the time to review it. It will have updates regarding my life, the life of Mosaic Church in Wichita, and onogings related to The Virtual Pew.

The summer has been rather crazy, let me see if I can paraphrase for you in short notice the events of the summer so far: my son left home, he is with his girlfriend, they plan on getting married next May and they are expecting a baby. That said, God calls me to love my son, and his girlfriend, that don’t mean I agree with everything, but it is what it is. We are all called to love!

Next up, my daughter quit her job to finish her graduate studies and work as a graduate assistant at Wichita State University, shortly thereafter, due to the economy her husband lost his job and now times are going to be challenging. She is smart enough to have saved money for the mortgage payment for their house for a year. To hear her husband state it, “We have the house payment, but don’t know if we will have electricity or not.”

My wife had surgery on her foot and leg, this put a kink into things, I spent much of the summer home with her, helping take care of her, it was good, but at times stressing.

Then we found out our landlord, in the house we had a lease option to purchase on, filed bankruptcy. We are still in limbo here until it goes to court. Long story there, but oh boy, you can only imagine.

We had to put our little dog down, seems he became to aggressive, killed 11 chickens in 2 days, bit me, snapped at a little boy, and well, the Humane Society don’t rehab dogs like that

My wife got a band together; we played a number of concerts in June, and have more coming up. We opened for a band named SHEL from Colorado and was blessed to spend some time with that family over the summer, friends last forever.

My mother died. I made it home to be with her prior to her death, it wasn’t easy, and some friends helped make this trip possible. Apparently some people sent gifts that never got to us. If you were one of those making a gift, please let us know, some of those are obvious, others not since we never received some of the gifts. I don’t know what is up but we want people to be aware. We also received a kind gift from friends at Hollywood Jesus that allowed my wife to visit and be there with me for the funeral. Without their generosity, this wouldn’t have happened.

Then we have a movie company, TiRoMa films out of Tulsa that has committed to making the movie on my life. Right now they are reviewing the manuscript of The Keystone Kid, will work out a script and go from there. This is exciting.

We also provided through The Virtual Pew’s wrestling associations scholarship monies to various individuals in college. Two of those recipients, James Fox and Gage Deere are previous recipients of these small scholarships, but others have also benefited and we hope this aspect of our ministry continues. Thanks to those contributing to help make these opportunities available.

Now there have been other things going on, like at Mosaic. The church continues to stay alive, while we are running out of funding in October, we have hope of getting additional funding as we essentially went through a relaunch in June. While the church was funded for 3 years, only a year of that has been with me at the helm. For the first year there we built relationship and learned to love each other. After a year we started the regrowth process. We started this during the end of June, and it has been doing well despite the 3 weeks I had to spend in Tennessee helping my sister with my mothers’ estate. Mosaic needs additional funding to keep things going. We are at a vulnerable stage bu things look positive if we get that little bit of help over the next year.

Mosaic is starting a Abuse Recovery Center in October of this year. I and another individual at Mosaic, Debbie Elwood is starting this program. I have extensive experience as a director of Mental Health Rehabilitation programs and extensive experience in counseling. Debbie has her Masters from Emporia State University and has experience in counseling. This program will be a recovery center for persons of all ages who have been physically and sexually abused. It will be provided on an as you can afford basis and will be largely funded with outside contributions. Mosaic could use your help with this venture; NOW! For now, Debbie or I will be receiving a salary. We hope the program builds to where it will supplement financial needs of the church, plus provide additional salary needs for myself and a full-salary for Debbie. This is a dream of mine and we’ve already had some interest expressed from around the country. My story with abuse is fairly well known and we hope this opens up doors for ministry.

The article in Dr. Charles Stanley’s magazine In Touch, June Edition, opened many doors for ministry. I have provided counsel to an individual on the PGA tour, encouraged women and men across the country, spent time on the telephone, via letter, and face to face with people touched by my story. I want to offer a special thanks to Dr. Charles Stanley, but also Lisa Baker who wrote the story. While we have had no additional income come in, there has been a lot of ministry taking place. I want to touch on just a small sample of that ministry, and in this small sample, encourage you, and motivate you to do your part.

One of the areas I was not expecting to occur was the amount of email, letters and so forth I would get from prisoners or people incarcerated who found out one way or another about the story.

Let me explain today’s activities, at least as of 11:15 AM. I woke up, took my wife to car pool to work with a friend, and then went home to do The Virtual Pew updates. I showered at 8 PM (woke up at 6 AM) Then left to go visit a prisoner in work release whose family put us in touch with each other. Ended up getting to the work release program and the facility would not allow a visit. I then drove to the post office, picked up the mail, two letters today from inmates, one in Kansas, and another in Texas.

I drive straight to the coffee shop where I set up office a couple of days a week and started reading the letters and then writing letters of response to those inmates. I just finished, and will spend the rest of the day trying to do a little sermon work, some visitation, and then the writing and posting of this newsletter.

I want to share something that is consistent with the letters and contacts I am getting from inmates and specifically the two letters this morning.

The first thing mentioned in the letters is usually; (especially with a first letter) is how grateful they are to hear from someone. It seems as if they hear on occasion from all kinds of bad influences, but never from Christians. If what is stated is true, and I believe it is, Christians have little to do with inmates and often times Christians even hurt them due to their lack of concern. Apparently many of the inmates have hopes, and want to walk with Christ, but they need to know they are loved from those on the outside who are willing to help them in this journey.

This morning I thought of something, Jesus tells us to visit those in prison, now we have easy access to do this via letters. Now that said, nothing replaces a face to face, and for those I can, I attempt the face to face visits. This morning I told an inmate in Beaumont Texas I would visit him when I received designated funding to do so. I told him, I don’t have much money, but maybe someone will help fund this trip so we can spend 4 hours together on a Saturday and Sunday. He is doing what he needs from his part to help I am doing what I can, and hopefully you will do what you can.

I thought of something else I hadn’t thought of before. Jesus commands us to visit those in prison. Most of us don’t do it. I wonder what the response of Jesus will be for those who not only don’t visit those in prison, don’t write letters and when asked, still turn their backs on the very people God has commanded us to love. We know some want those letters, those visits, now we have them asking and some of us; including at times me, make excuses as to why we can’t do it. What would Jesus tell us in those situations?

Today I want to provide you information on one inmate who has made his requests public, listen to some of his words first though:

“Two things caught my attention with you Mike; One is we’ve had similar childhoods and like you, I have greatly been neglected by the Christian Community. I placed an ad on the internet where I used the name a “Gay Ad: and pictures of me. The mail used to pour in, but this new ad, Christian has not received one response. You can read it at": Click here to see the post from Gary

Gary went on in his 4 page letter to me, all hand written all seeking out a relationship with someone who knows Christ. He poured out his heart, but after spending 11 ½ years in prison. He was incarcerated again in 2004 for a 25 year sentence. He don’t have much more than time on his hand. Here is a captive audience who wants to hear more about Jesus, more about how we can share in life, and yet, not a single Christian has responded to his request. I am grateful he saw the article in, In Touch Magazine, I am grateful because I want to be used in a ministry that still reaches out to The Lost, The Last, and The Least. Why? Because Jesus has told me to, he has told you to, the question is will we be obedient.

Despite what some have said, the lies, the hate spewed at times towards this ministry, we continue. The rewards from a financial perspective are few, the rewards from a spiritual basis though, they are many, and thankfully daily. To know God chooses to use this ministry, to use me, and yes to use you in regards to the prayers you have offered and for some the financial support is an amazing place to be. I find joy in being in that place, not because I have done anything, but because Christ does it through me. Will you allow yourself to find a place where Christ can do something through you? I pray this is the case, because God is not good some of the time, God is good all of the time!

I have new friends, new family, I pray God doesn’t allow me to forget them. You can meet those people as well. I encourage you, write an inmate today, and become a part of their life. If you can’t do that, I would ask you to consider helping this ministry do that, if you don’t feel comfortable supporting this ministry, find a ministry you can support. I know God will meet our needs, of course that means some have to listen to the call of God.

I have another request outside of the regular requests though. We need ongoing support for our ministry, both in finance and prayer. I am asking for something special today, can you help make it possible to have a personal, face to face visit with Gary in Texas? It will require lodging in Beaumont Texas, (I am not opposed to staying at someone’s house) and I am not opposed to speaking while there to help with funds. But gas, would be needed, possibly some lodging down and back for the trip. I would also ask that help be provided to help pay someone to speak at Mosaic in my absence, I like to see to it that if possible, we can bless the speakers who fill in. This trip would take 2 days there, I could speak along the way, and 2 days back. It is close enough to my uncles’ house in Florida I could hop over and spend some time in the Panhandle of Florida or other locations near that Western Panhandle and speak in that area. I could make a week long trip or more out of it to speak in various places and share about this ministry. The intent though, is to spend face to face time with Gary. I told him this morning I would make the request. Maybe, just maybe, some will see the importance in a single, solitary soul seeking to see God.

Now I am asking something else, can you write to Gary, let him know you are different than other Christians who have ignored his pleas. He doesn’t need someone to preach to him, put him down; he needs someone to share the love of Christ. I will share the addresses and names of other inmates as I get permission, but a good place to find inmates to correspond with to write to can be found by clicking here.

I ask you to do more, do more than most Christians who sit on their duffs and make excuses, do more to share the love of Christ with the very people he has called us to love. Do more to be the church, to be the bride that Christ is proud of cherishes. If you are already doing these things, great, remind others to do their part.

If willing to write Gary, his address is as follows:

Gary Raleigh #1268593
Stiles Unit
3060 FM 3514
Beaumont TX 77705-7635 USA

Thanks and God Bless all,

Mike

I Could Say A Lot Of Things, But What I Will Say Is

I don’t know how to feel right now, in fact I don’t know if I even want to share how I feel about anything right now. There is the good stuff, heck that is easy, there is the hard stuff, shoot, even that is easy, but then there are the painful things, the confusion, frustration, hurt, anger and all. There is the feeling of how do I survive everything I am going through? Where are the friends? Has this ministry really helped anyone? Why do Christians still take advantage of others? I could go on and on. Please, understand, today is more for me than anyone, and I really don’t want any sympathy or anything like that, I am actually kind of sick of false or fake sympathy, but that is another story. I am busy, I know God has used me to bless, help and touch others, but I am tired, I need time for me, but when I take that time others suffer, even today, a 50 so year old woman was trying to justify to me why she wouldn’t involve the law when children were being abused. “God help those children, God teach those adults a lesson about the pain.” I know, hard words but it is how I feel. I won't even touch on the wrestling bruhaha here in Kansas at the moment. It is amazing though, people treat your son like crap and then expect him to come back and be treated like crap some more. People are users, you give and give, and then it seems like some, (far from all, thank God!) think some are dumb enough to walk back and be treated like crap again, like any of us enjoy that.

Let’s see, an explanation of what has gone on so far this week may be of benefit. There is this band SHEL who is staying with our family for around a week, and the blessings I have seen in this family have kept me going. More on this in a future article, but for now, I have a new brother, a new sister, Lynn and Andrew, and to the girls, know this, a middle age man has learned and been blessed not just from your music, although your music has been incredible, but your lives and relationship with each other is a real thing of beauty and a lesson you will teach and show so many people your career progresses, and rest assured, it will progress.

There is a need I have to go to Tennessee, mixed in with all kinds of other things. I have concerts to play with my wife on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday yet, and on top of that, realizing I may miss at least one of those dates. My sister and I, (mainly my sister because she has been there) had to sign a DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) order with the hospital my mom is in. My emotions have been happy, sad, confused and more. I would be lying if I said I haven’t shed more tears this week than I have shed in a long time. It is likely my mom will not live more than a few weeks as of this writing. It would also be a lie to say I haven't been blessed more this week than I have in a long time. Let me explain.

Earlier in the week I got a certified letter in the mail, I wrote a little about that last week but it was an incredible blessing when I was expecting an incredible let down. I have spent time with my son; I have been so blessed to get to be with him. While I have expected and practiced tough love, at this point in time, I have never, repeat, never quit loving and wanting the most for my son. I also saw a movie yesterday; I know, I know, a movie? Yep a movie, I went to see UP a review on that later, but what a blessing to see art with an incredible message. This movie had all of that.

I have also had the privilege of working with my wife and her band, also with a loving, serving and caring wife and a wonderful son in law that is as much as any father could ever want for his daughter. Then there is the church where I have the absolute honor and blessing of serving. Let it be clear, while there are some kinks to work out for Mosaic Wichita, there is hope, there are people who clearly love God and want to serve. I find it such a blessing and honor to serve God’s people as their under shepherd.

That is about it for the moment, I wish I had more to say, I wish I had more “meaning: and “life lessons” in this but I just had to put a few words down on paper. I guess if I know anything, while my confidence in people is still strained at times, God finds ways of showing real people in my path that show real love. While I have been hurt, there has been love, while there has been doubt, there has been God. I know that because I have seen God in the lives of those who has shown me love, and been there, including some girls and their family from Colorado, a loving wife, two beautiful children, a son in law, and real friends from a real church. To those who groan, grieve and pray for me, thank you, thank you for allowing me to be real, and allowing me to be who God created me to be.

I have to play the video of the girls who have kept my week from being so tragic. The song is uplifting, but so are the girls. Their only fault is they don't like Mama Mia, but other than that, they would be perfect. To watch the video, just click, otherwise click on the following link.

You Tool! Whose Hand Controls You

Do you realize you are a tool? The truth is, we are all tools whether we like it or not. But the question then becomes, who controls you. You see a tool is an instrument that is of little value unless it is in the hands of a skillful master and used in the way it was intended. I knew this, and believed it, but as usual, I needed a reminder of that and this last week has provided one. Please take the time to read this as it is a sincere effort to express thanks and gratitude, but it is also a chance to share something that I think we can all learn from. I have already shed tears today from this lesson in life, I want it to help others more than you will ever know.

As many know, my wife recently had foot surgery; they had to shave bone spurs off of four of her toes, cut off a bunion, and then stretch her Achilles tendon, all on her left foot. She has not been able to put weight on the foot for 2 weeks, and will be in a cast for a minimum of 4 months, and won’t be able to put a shoe on her foot for around 6 months. Needless to say, stressful and welcome Mr. Mom!

Then there was Monday of last week. We have been leasing our house with an option to buy. This method of purchasing a house is a necessity for an underground house. Thankfully we chose this option as there were some plumbing problems that came about. We were into our 2nd year of a 3 year option and we got notice that our landlord, who has been wonderful by the way, has had to file bankruptcy. We were told that his trustee, attorney had informed him to not let us know and we would just get an eviction notice within 3 – 6 months. For a family that has made the effort to develop a co-op for chickens and a garden for people in his church, and has started planning activities where the neighbors can start to get to know each other, the thought of having to move has made us sick. We have contacted a realtor about what we need to do to buy the house but haven’t heard anything back yet. I guess that with the economy, there is still a chance we could loose the house, we just don’t know.

Then there are the activities at church, we had a band stay with us the last couple of days from Battle Creek Michigan, and will have another stay with us next week for a week. Then there are the minimum of 6 concerts I will be playing in along with my wife, son in law, our band and another band over a 7 day period. Of course the band from Ft. Collins Colorado will be staying with us for 7 days.

Now don’t get me wrong, the bands with us, the concerts they are a great thing for us to do and all of the things centered on serving and ministering to people. The truth is I love the person of the Real St. Nicholas and the concept of Santa Claus for a reason. I love to give, and I can think of few other things in life that gives me that kind of joy.

Well all of this has been going on, and it has been a roller coaster week, I even celebrated my 50th birthday last week with a large number of friends, and there has been so many ministries taking place as a result of the article in Dr. Charles Stanley’s In Touch Magazine it has been unreal. But then on Friday, the nerves set in as we received notification that we had a certified letter to pick up at the post office. Now I don’t know about you, but I can think of very few things related to a certified letter that is good. All weekend, my wife and I stressed, even requesting prayer at church related to the only thing we could imagine, our home situation.

This morning, with my shirt put on backwards, inside and out and all, (hard to do for polo) I went to the post office early in the morning to pick up the letter. I walk in, nervous and anxious and picked up the letter from Chester’s. I had done a search over the weekend on a Chester’s in Wichita and could only come up with a steak house, I had no idea what that would have to do with anything. But sure enough, the certified letter was from a 4 star restaurant in Wichita with a top recognized chef. I opened up the letter once I got in the car and saw that a friend of my family, The Virtual Pew and our Church had given my wife and me a gift certificate for what was to us a significant amount to this fine restaurant. This was a blessing that I want to comment on to some extent if you will bear with me a little while longer.

Those who know me know that I don’t do the extravagant things any more, but this morning I kind of feel, maybe for the first time in a long time some of the thoughts that Jesus experienced when he had the expensive oil poured on his feet. People sometimes give gifts to the church I pastor or to The Virtual Pew. I am grateful for those gifts more than you know, but this morning, I experienced something personal. Something personal is something that you can’t ignore. Someone thought enough of my wife and me that they wanted to bless us with something extravagant. I realized this morning, that that personal touch is something that touches in ways we can’t even comprehend. This morning I shed tears over the gift, why? Because someone thought of me and someone thought of my wife.

Now here is the thing about all of this, for years I had issues with people with money, and the truth is I believe Jesus meant exactly what he said when he said it is as easy for a camel to get through the eye of a needle than it is for a rich man to get into the kingdom of Heaven. Here is what I have come to realize from study and searching though; there are those with money who don’t see their money as their money. They see the importance of using their money for the Kingdom of God. God has hit me with this hard in the last 12 hours, once from a stranger, last night at a concert, who said, here is some money for you to use as you want. We gave a band $50 of that money last night, and put the rest in the offering for the church which looses money in its concerts to bless bands and many young people. I was touched by this random act of kindness, then this morning, to have that gift given to my wife and me, I can’t tell you how much I have thought of how some wealthy people, at least by my standard, are willing to give and bless others. One of those over the last 2 days realized and desired to bless my wife and me, how can you express gratitude for things like that.

Here is what I have come to realize, we are all tools, some cheap flea market tools that are used in the wrong way, and others a quality tool like a craftsman that has a lifetime guarantee that is used in the hands of a master. That master controlling the tool can be a carpenter, a mechanic, or any number of other craftsmen, but they are none the less masters. They know how to use their gifts, whether encouragement, loving, money or whatever in a most perfect way. They are willing to listen to the call of the Holy Spirit in how they use those gifts.

Here is a question for you, what kind of tool are you? Are you letting that tool be controlled by the master craftsman, God? Or are you allowing yourself to control that gift, or maybe even an enemy greater than any enemy you know who has no desire for that tool to be used for good?

I have been blessed today, I am so grateful that I felt the love of another human being, I had to pass the phone to my wife so she could say thank you to that person as I started to cry this morning. I realize, as does this individual, that they are a tool from God and are used by God. I realized a long time ago that people that have supported this ministry and the work my wife and me do are special, each gift has been special and needed, but it is rare that we get to experience the “personal” end of things and it feels good. I am reminded today, if it feels good for my wife and me, how good will it feel for someone else who are not so used to seeing the blessings of God? I am reminded of how God uses people in the area of gifts this morning from a passage of scripture, but before I say that, I want to say thanks to those who have given to not only Mosaic, and The Virtual Pew, but also my wife and me. May we all realize that God can use us in the giving of gifts? Now that passage of Scripture that I hope inspires all of us.

Matthew 7: 11 ~ As bad as you are, you still know how to give good gifts to your children. But your heavenly Father is even more ready to give good things to people who ask.
