Today, I sat back doing some work, playing a little bit, and then suddenly, I was knocked back, and brought to tears from watching a video on You Tube I saw being promoted on a television news program. The video or a version of it has received as of this writing, over 30 million, yes that’s right 30 MILLION views in the last 4-5 days. It is so powerful I am using it in church this week to drive home a point, a point I think many commentators are missing as they comment on this world wide phenomena.
The video is of a television show in Britain called Brittan’s Got Talent. The video features a 47, going on 48 year old woman named Susan Boyle. Miss Boyle claims to have never had a boyfriend, never been married, in fact, never been kissed. Most commentators are commenting that what makes the video so powerful is that Miss Boyle is not the most attractive woman on the planet, I challenge, the seemingly beautified individuals that bring us our news and entertainment may have lost a bit of common sense along the way. Let me digress if I may.
Miss Boyle is a lady who is at her own description mentally challenged, and not educated. She has lived in a small Scottish town and over the years taken care of her family. Her mother recently died at the age of 91. Miss Boyle has also stated that she is merely caring out her mother’s wishes to go after a singing career. Susan Boyle dreams to be a singer, unfortunately, outside of church and a few other places, she has not been heard, that is until just the other night. To hear her state that with her pudgy body, unkept hair and seemingly unprofessional responses and actions would have one, like many in the audience at the taping of the show believe along with the judges that this was more of a joke than an adventure they were about to partake.
While it is true, many may be enthralled with the overnight sensation of Susan Boyle due to her appearance, background, and actions, but I challenge it is about something much more than that.
Here is the truth, most of us are not beauty queens or kings, most of us are not a part of the let’s look good and promote ourselves society, in fact, I would challenge, there are far more of us like Susan Boyle, with the exception of an incredible voice, than we may realize. Most of us are looking for meaning, most of us have unknown and unkept secrets, in fact, I challenge, God sees every single one of us as having an ability like no other if we but can tap into that ability. I challenge, each of us, have the potential to love, and impact lives if we but tap into the God given ability and talents he has given us.
I was asked last week by a gentlemen in Florida what it was about him that would have God wanting anything to do with him. That was an honest and sincere question, but the truth is, his ability to challenge and help others, his ability to use the unique attributes God has given him is something that many of us take for granted. The understanding of that concept by millions of people across the globe in seeing this woman, who took a two year absence from singing after her mothers death can be an inspiration that moves each of us. It has me.
I cannot find a single video at this point that allows me to embed this video. You will have to click on the link, I challenge you to do so, spend 7 minutes more of your time to be challenged, to be moved by this little woman from Scotland who has blessed the world, not just with her voice though, but the voice of her life, a voice where it is obvious people have written her off for the way she looks, the way she acts, but like any book that is judged before it is opened, any movie that is judged or commented on before it is seen, this is a lesson for life, a lesson that can make this world a better place. Dig deep, find out that gift God has given you, find that talent that God can use in you to touch others, and by all means, learn the lesson, the lesson that sometimes, life will give us blessings through others, if we will but give others a chance.

While the following is not the full video, it is a video regarding Miss Boyle that I can upload and embed. Check it out, but only after clicking on the video link above.
Here are the lyrics to the song she is singing:
I dreamed a dream in time gone by
When hope was high,
And life worth living
I dreamed that love would never die
I dreamed that God would be forgiving.
Then I was young and unafraid
When dreams were made and used,
And wasted
There was no ransom to be paid
No song unsung,
No wine untasted.
But the tigers come at night
With their voices soft as thunder
As they tear your hopes apart
As they turn your dreams to shame.
And still I dream he'll come to me
And we will live our lives together
But there are dreams that cannot be
And there are storms
We cannot weather...
I had a dream my life would be
So different from this hell I'm living
So different now from what it seems
Now life has killed
The dream I dreamed.
