Last Impressions

I have been trying to catch up on one of my favorite television shows, America’s Got Talent, (AGT).  I saw an episode this morning that got me to thinking. A performer was singing, and he shared about his last words with his wife, and her last words to him. She was killed in the same helicopter crash that killed Koby Bryant. The words shared between the two before she was killed, was, “I love you.”

I have lived a life, as has many that hungers and thirsts to be loved. Unfortunately, it seems that for many in this world, it seems to be okay to exhibit hate, to display superiority, to let others know, we are better than you. The last thing it seems we do is to tell or show others, they are loved.

I have had reminders of this way too much lately. From Bible studies, to just scrolling through on Facebook, there are reminders all around. Is it any wonder that the suicide rate is drastically up in the United States?  We live in a world that seems to have forgotten the importance of telling and showing others love. God help us.

What will be the last words others will remember you for, or you will remember others?  Truth is, none of us are guaranteed of tomorrow, another truth is, that this world is so depressing, that for many, there is no desire to go on and so they end it. While we like to blame them, say things like, “I told them I loved them,” or things like, “I never knew,” or any other myriad of things, do we practice the two things we need to display via words and actions that we love?

Today, I’m heartbroken because of the reminder of the lack of love in our world. Frankly, it may be a reason I get depressed in a time of life I should constantly be in joy.  I don’t know, the negativity has an impact, yet I try to survive, focus on the positive, but it isn’t easy. If it’s that way for me, I know it’s that way for others. Unfortunately, I don’t know if society cares anymore. I wish that weren’t so, but it is what it is.  The studies, the statistics, and the reality is proof that this is a problem with epidemic proportions.  What can we do to change this problem?  We can start with us, and for me, that means, telling you, I love you.

Before The I Do's In Engagement and Marriage

Ephesians 5:25 ~ Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.

Over the years I’ve done several weddings as a pastor. Of course, I’ve only been a part of one wedding. The wedding to my late wife of over 40 years. But here I am, at a new place, a place where I am once again engaged to a beautiful Godly woman to be married. As a result, I find myself back at the place seeking reminders not for others but for myself. In that reminder I am reminded of the admonition to love my wife in the same way Jesus loved the church, called his bride, and of my need to be willing to give myself up for my bride in the same way that Christ loved and gave himself up for his bride.  Of course, I could speak about the role of women as well, I’ve counseled women as to their obligations but I am seeking wisdom for my obligations as a husband, my own reminder. If I was to say anything about the relationship between a woman and a man engaged in marriage, I would use the following verse to apply for both of them.

1 Peter 4:8 - Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins.

Of course, the question from the passage out of 1 Peter for me is how does on keep on loving the other?  I have seen so many times the love that exists early on, often called puppy love, but over time that love becomes less active, and in some ways, even stagnate. Truth is, for me, in my first marriage that was never a problem except a brief 6-month period or so. I was working way too many hours, and, in those days, I spent less time with my late wife and she therefore as a matter of consequence, less time with me. My eyes and heart begin to stray, and mistakes were made. As a result, my wife and I almost divorced. It was so serious that we even spoke to our two children about the inevitable reality that we were looking at and strongly considering divorce. Thankfully God opened my eyes and I made the commitment to spend less time working. It involved less time at the office and less time at work. I’ll never forget my children correcting me and telling me that I was still working on the computer at home. As a result, I set a schedule that I would not take work home with me and when I worked out of the home, that I would not work later than 5:30 PM, of course there were times I broke that rule but it was very rare that I did. My family noticed and our love and family as a result grew.

On this point there was also two other things I did and maintained over the course of my early marriage and will so in my upcoming marriage. I always opened the door for my wife, and I maintained a weekly dating relationship and vacations together. It is imperative that couples find time away with no distractions for time together, on a weekly basis at least 2 days a week, and on an annual basis I think a minimum of 2 weeks a year. In my new relationship with my new bride this is going to be critical. Not having children that we are raising, that time together is imperative, but then again, it is imperative for any couple if they want their love and marriage to succeed.

Proverbs 31:10 - An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels.

An honest man will recognize the importance of his wife, and he, and she will learn, that she is indeed more important than anything. More important than money, investments, time, everything. It is an amazing thing about the love that God can bless between a man and a woman.  Of course, there is an expectation that the wife is a good wife, Proverbs even calls her an “excellent wife.”  That takes work, but work from both parties. In that work, the most valuable thing possible between two people happens, a love where the two, really do, become one.

Of course there are aspects that many, even those in the church have taken out of context and not looked at in totality.  The following passage from Ephesians is likely the single passage taken the most out of context, especially the initial instructions to the wife.

Ephesians 5:22-33 - Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church— for we are members of his body. “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

After reading in context, I always point out that the greater responsibility in the relationship falls on the man as opposed to the woman. The main thing I think to take into consideration is the reality that each party, the husband, and the wife, have obligations and responsibilities to each other. It isn’t about being a solo party in a wedding or relationship, it is about being in it together. The moment one gets more into themselves and their needs than they do the needs of the couple that has become one, the marriage is set up for failure. Marriage is an ordained thing from God. To go outside the design and desire of God is one way to make sure we don’t experience the true totality of the beauty that can come about from God joining two people together. On that point is a good reminder though, God is the one that joins the two together, and God alone. Of course, sometimes mistakes can be made and marriage misunderstood. In those mistakes, don’t expect to receive the beauty and benefits that God assures if marriage and relationship is done right. I think few things exemplify or illustrates that last point more than the last verse in this posting.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 - Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up! Again, if two lie together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone? And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him—a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

If thinking in the context of marriage and relationship, we can see this verse is often taken out of context. We need to realize, the beauty of two working together in their relationship, in their marriage, is a strength and bond that provides multiple benefits.

In closing, I am working on my new relationship. I have honestly never wanted anything so much. I so love the woman I am engaged to be married. I want it to work so much. I had a great marriage with my late wife, but I want this marriage to be stronger, to be better. Why? Because I think God expects growth. I hopefully have learned enough to make our marriage better on my part and have learned from the mistakes so I can be a better husband.

There is one last thing I know, I know for a fact, that if others take these passages seriously, seek and pray about the Holy Spirit leading them that they are far more likely to succeed in their marriage and relationships.  I know that for me, I want the love I experienced to be magnified, heck, in many ways, I need it more than ever, so for me, I’m praying, applying, and asking the Holy Spirit to walk alongside me and my bride to be each step of the journey.

Why Can't We Be Friends

All through the Bible we see the concept of friendship presented. Even in today’s world, the concept of friend has been popularized by such things as having “friends” at Facebook.  Unfortunately, that word friend because of things like Facebook has in my opinion been bastardized. That is, it has strayed so far from it’s original meaning that it essentially has lost its meaning.

Using the Biblical definition, what is a friend? From the Bible Dictionary we have the following: “In both Testaments the ideas of friend and friendship involve three components: association, loyalty, and affection. There are also three levels of meaning: friendship as association only; friendship as association plus loyalty; and friendship as association plus loyalty plus affection.”

With the above definition I can’t help but wonder, have we and people lost the meaning of things like loyalty and affection?  It seems to me as if the word friend is just a word for someone we know, better fitting with the concept of an associate or acquaintance, but certainly, not someone we are loyal and/or are faithful to.

Some know I share my emotions on my sleeves, or tattooed arms if you will. I am not afraid to share my feelings and emotions with others. It is one of the things that makes me unique I guess, it is a way of me dealing with life as well as an understanding that sometimes it is a way to help others deal with the same thoughts, they may have that I either am, or have experienced. So here goes.

At this point in my life, I have had very few real friends. A lot of acquaintances but few friends. Obviously, my late wife was more than a lover, she was a friend. Then, with a real blessing of God. I now have someone I can talk to about anything like no one I have ever been able to talk to. I don’t mean this as a slam in any way on anyone, but at this point, I can talk to my fiancé Sheila about things like I have never been able to talk to another about except for the Lord. That, my “friends,” is a real and true friendship. I have a question though, what if we could experience that level of friendship and love for each other, as I do believe that love does exist in a brotherly and sisterly way with real friends?  How much easier would it be to deal with life’s issues, it’s difficulties?

I have PTSD, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.  It is a horrible condition. If you don’t know what it is I encourage you to look it up. It can be debilitating and is often influenced by triggers or events that bring back memories.  I recently went through a bout of depression because of some triggers that are and have been going on. I needed friends, friendship, the feeling of love that only friends can bring about. I prayed, I asked others to pray for me, and thankfully they did and even more thankfully, God heard those prayers.

In short, God answered those prayers by allowing me to spend time with an old friend from Tennessee who was taking his new bride to be back to Tennessee from Washington State. That day, reflecting on old times, just hearing the voice and dialect of “home”, (I am originally from Upper East Tennessee but haven’t lived there in over 40 years) was so healing. To talk about old memories, good times, hard times, it was healing. But there was a kicker that God also provided. Besides my best friend Jesus, God provided me time with my best earthly friend, the person I have come to love with my all, by far the person I can talk to like no other on this earth, God provided me time with my Sheila.

Sheila works a tough schedule, often with mixed hours and long hours that prevents us from spending the time together that I am so hungry and thirsty for. So, I’ve learned to cherish those times together, even if just for moments. While we talk online when we can, it just isn’t like being there, to caress her arm, or to experience a passionate kiss, and then, to also just talk. To talk about things that are important, to talk about things we can’t talk to any other about. To know that the person is listening, and that they care. That is what real friends do. With Sheila and I/we experience all facets of love, a Godly Love, a Brotherly Sister Love, and beyond that an Erotic Passionate love meant for a married couple. That is the ultimate friend but unfortunately, we can’t all meet, nor should we, all those facets of friendship. I do believe that the last one mentioned, Erotic or Eros Love is intended for two people God has brought together to partner in life and to essentially as the Bible states, to go to the place where the two become one. The question is, how do we get to the place where we can be real friends with others in the appropriate ways we can? We all know, we need real friendship, but it is unfortunately lacking.

I don’t have all the answers but the thing I do know is we have to be careful. One reason it is so hard to develop real friendships is because of issues related to trust. We all fail here, let that be clear, but it is something we must work at. It isn’t an issue of if we can be trustworthy, it becomes an issue of will we be trustworthy and then, be willing to perfect that character trait.  Then and only then, do I think we can trust enough to be willing to be open and share in the important things of life, be it emotions or experiences with others. It’s not easy, I know. I am often asked to trust people. My general response is that I’ve learned to only trust myself and God and half of the time I don’t trust myself. Believe me, I know, it isn’t easy, but I know, it’s necessary.  For me, let me make something clear, I can for example speak to Sheila like no other, my truest friend because she opened up to me about herself. She took the first step which enabled me to trust her more. It is because she was willing to take that step, that my life is so much better because now, well, now I have someone I can talk to about anything. Of course, the Lord is and has always been there, but there is definitely something about us as human beings carrying out that concept of love, trust, that the Lord expects us to have in Him.

Here is my challenge today, work at being a friend, not an acquaintance, not just a social media friend, but a real friend. Here is the crazy thing about it, when we work on this, not only does it improve our life, but it also improves the life of the one we have chosen to be friends with.  So, in that regard, I challenge, work to make life better not just for you, but those friends, even if they be few that surround you and share in life with you.

For some reason, it seems like this song is appropriate, after all, I wonder, Why Can't We Be Friends.

Love and a New Partner in Life

Where do I even start?

Well I guess the best place to start is with my family, especially Nathan and Marathana who have blessed me in my efforts and where I am at in this point of life including the decision that has been made. Understand, this isn’t an explanation, it isn’t an apology, it isn’t an attempt to make me feel justified. For those who have followed me over the years, you know I share openly on my social media pages which I’ve been doing shortly since the start of social media way back in the early days of Myspace. Social Media is an extension of ministry work I do it for a couple of reasons, One, it is my nature is to share, journal if you will my thoughts and feelings. It has helped me recover from my past which was horrific in many ways, yet, looking back on life it was a blessing in other ways. I also share because I hear daily of how this ministry has helped many and inspired others.

I fell in love in my late teens with the woman I thought I would spend the rest of my life with.  I knew her for some 43/44 years, and was her partner for 42 years, a little more than 41 of those we were married. For all but maybe 6 – 7 months of those years we were very happily married.

The remaining years of our life were FANTASTIC as we traveled the country and worked on her Bucket List of things to do and see.  I will forever love Mary Jane and am learning in life that one love does not negate the possibility of another when you have lost your spouse..

Sheila Tracy Mitchell has become a new love and a love in a way I never thought I would experience again. Our relationship isn’t like the one I had with Mary Jane in many ways, but in many ways it is. I don’t even know how to explain it, other than there is a massive amount of friendship, fun, serious discussions, times of worship together, love, and romance, (and we are trying to follow God’s plan in that last part). I feel like a teenager again, in love but being older knowing the difference between real love and infatuation, but hey, let’s back up just a little.

I didn’t think I would ever marry again. Mary Jane always said I would, I said she was crazy.  I really didn’t believe I would and wasn’t planning on it in any way. We did talk that I may like to find someone to hang around with, talk to and so forth, but I could do that with guys. Well, that’s what I thought.

Looking back on life, I realize I need to not only love but for me, more importantly feel loved. The last year and a half of Mary Jane’s life and my time after her death were horrible and it took 6 months to begin to make some terrible mistakes.

I was lonely and there were several women contacting me on social media, a lot, with a lot of hints and advances. I dated some, and please understand, the mistakes made were my mistakes, I take full responsibility, thankfully I had a couple of friends who called me out. I broke off those relationships. I realized after speaking to some friends, that as a guy, I could give, and give, and love and love, but that didn’t mean I was going to be loved in return.

Now before I go to far I must also say this, I did date one lady who was a wonderful, dear Christian friend and has been for years. I must say this because this friend is still a friend and I am grateful for that, but the truth is, there just was not a romantic sparkle. She is a sweet, dear lady, and I am confident will be, and has been supportive in many ways of my new relationship, but, let's get back to the story here.

I had a list of 3 people, where I thought there was no way they would ever go out with me. I’ve always set my standards high and these ladies were you might say way above my class. I figured, why not ask the one at the top of my list whom I had admired and respected for her personality and faith for some years. I’ve always been one to shoot for the moon and stars.

Sheila Tracy Mitchell was at the top of my list, so after thinking there was no way she would say yes, I decided to ask her out for a movie and dinner anyway. She would have to give her own response as to why she said yes. She is a lot more private than I, but when she said yes, I did a little joy and happy dance, literally, not making that up. So we went out to dinner and a movie. Since that date almost 4 months ago now, we haven’t been hardly apart, seeing each other 3 – 4 days a week, and me really enjoying our time together, be it, walking and talking, going to the movies, or our regular routine, something I’ve never done before, going dancing most every Saturday Night.

Shelia works various shifts as a home health care worker, so we search for time together. Let me tell you, the puppy love feeling has moved far beyond that to a point of real love, a love I believe is a  lasting love.

Now the most noticeable thing that people notice about us when they see us is we are a mixed race couple.  For those that have known me and/or my family over the years, that was never an issue, having a black son is an indication of that.

None of this means that ever single person has been supportive of our relationship for various reasons. On the point of race, understand, I had a former friend who stated he had an issue and made a jest comment. I will say here, notice I said former friend. It is a blessing to see how many people have supported our relationship and made comment on how beautiful we are together, or how much they enjoy watching us together, and on and on.  Let me be clear, I absolutely, with all of my heart have placed Sheila to the #2 point in my life. Jesus is #1, Sheila has become above all others, including myself. I know love, I lived a life despite one serious mistake, showed others how much I can love. I LOVE SHEILA TRACY MITCHELL!

Sheila and I went Facebook Official some weeks after we had made a commitment to each other to be exclusive with each other. We realized early on of the beautiful thing God had done in putting us together. There is more now, as of this writing, for now going on 3 weeks, we’ve held out on an announcement.

I had planned on asking Sheila to marry me at Jerry’s Bar and Grill, a place we go dancing, but at a concert on the Thursday before a situation arose that I realized I needed to jumpstart the proposal, I wanted Sheila to know that I loved her, would commit to her and be there for her in every way, so it was at Bradley Fair I asked, and she accepted to marry me.

Now there will be critics regarding the time of our relationship among other things. I would typically agree, 4 months is a quick period of time to make such a decision, but we have seen each other in that time more than anyone I’ve ever dated, including any 4 months prior to marriage with Mary Jane, and there is no doubt in my heart that this is right.

For the last couple of months, I’ve had 3 men that I’ve shared several things with to help hold me accountable. I’ve discussed several things with them in the process and sought wisdom; that will continue. Sheila and I also realize that an engagement is a period of time where we plan on getting married, but we still advance our relationship with each other. For this reason we have looked at the possibility of a February wedding but that is up in the air. It could be sooner, it could be later, (I pray sooner than later.) The bottom line is we are praying about not just our timing, but God’s time.

Sheila has been wearing her ring and I made the effort to contact family early on, some contacted me, some did not so for some family, and a lot of friends this will be the first time you have heard this news.

On June 22 Hollywood Jesus ran a story about this and how our love came to be, thetime we’ve known each other and the role Hollywood Jesus more or less played inus getting to know each other over the years.

I would have never imagined, the joy Sheila has brought into my life after such a long difficult period of time. I am smiling, laughing, and even dancing again. I would have never thought this was possible and am excited about the hope of the rest of my life with Sheila.

Redemption in Life and Music

I started writing for Hollywood Jesus back in the beginning because I strongly believed in the vision and concept of building bridges as opposed to putting up walls. I have tried to live that in all aspects of my life, sometimes, I succeed. It was through this effort and the help of David Bruce, HJ's founder and others that I started The Virtual Pew, an online community of faith helping build bridges, a concept that has extended into all areas of my life.

When I first started doing reviews all those years ago at Tabor College it was for music not movies. I always loved movies but music has always been my first love. Over the last 30 years I've been playing music. Prior to that starting in 1978 I did band management and concert promotion. Through all of those efforts I was inducted in 2018 into the International Blues Hall of Fame and with the death of my wife, she encouraged me to do my own project, so I did. It was the self titled project Pastor Mike and the Demon Slayer Blues Band, released in 2021.

It was back at the start of Covid that we scheduled our CD release party. To be short, it was a nightmare, literally. You see, we aren't a "Christian" band. We are a blues band. Although I am a Christiana and much of what I write is from a Christian world-view not everyone in the band is a Christian and I don't pretend that we are. Just like in real life, as a follower of Jesus, I work with people of varying faiths. For this show though, it was the Perfect Storm of all that could go wrong. First a keyboard player who was living with me, robbed me and moved out of the house, he was critical in getting the songs started. We as a band showed up but were not in the place to perform. Then there was the rush to fill band spots resulting in only one practice for the performing band. Then I was in an incredible amount of pain where I had taken 5 Oxys for pain.  I later found out I had had a heart attack on stage. Two weeks later I had quadruple bypass surgery for 4 arteries blocked 100%. After being on a ventilator for a couple of days and in ICU for several days, I begin the long road to recovery. That was around 5 months ago, and that horrible night musically needed the opportunity for redemption.

Redemption is a strange concept. It not only applies to issues related to faith but also life. With redemption sometimes comes the concept of one doing their part, be it a confession regarding mistakes, for example having the band play when I should have canceled, then that I was making mistakes in the decisions and leadership I was providing. I realized though, I needed to do something to correct the mistakes and failures in regards to the band.

So it was, about 3 weeks after my heart surgery I and the guys in the band made some hard decisions We decided to seek redemption. We begin practicing 3 - 4 times each week for as long as I could practice My lung capacity was not up to par and it will take upwards of a year to get to where it should be. It took work, effort and a willingness of others to give us a chance. I am sure word got out, without explanation as to why we were so bad in that first go around as a band. Sure we had had good outings but people would remember the one bad one.

After serious practice and effort we found people willing to give us a chance, first at a music festival where  we did 3, 1 and 1/2 hour sets, and then this last week at the place where the heart attack happened and we had had such a miserable outing. The Elbow Room in Wichita Kansas.

After so much effort not quitting, sticking it out, working through differences, the 4 of us sought redemption. We had learned to come together, me a Christian deeply devoted to my faith, yet, not judgmental and realizing I live in a world of brokenness, working alongside an agnostic who has serious issues with Christianity, and another who has also had issues with Christians. One of us a political conservative, one a moderate and another extremely to the left politically, together through music, realizing that the message of music, the concept of coming together as a band was far more important than the differences many choose to focus on. So these four ragamuffins, (yes I use that term with intent) came together to play for redemption It first begin with each other, then as an outward symbol to those who would witness our example.

The first one to give us a chance was the one who had first given the opportunity of where we failed so miserably. Thankfully, he, like God will give a second chance, it is only with second chances that any of us can correct the past, that's one reason it's so important to give others that second chance when we need to offer, an opportunity for redemption.

Sure, there were mistakes when we played. There was the occasional off key vocal, a missed chord or a dropped drum stick, but those mistakes were corrected. In the end, after the hard work where we appreciated the opportunity to correct our previous fiasco, we worked for redemption. In the end, we were appreciative that the crowd stuck around. Every song was applauded, something we hadn't heard before. Then there was the compliments. Things like, we were the best band in our area they had heard, or being amazed at our musicianship, being so tight as a band and much more. Compliments that went far and beyond what we expected, yet, were good to hear.

Did we obtain redemption? Yes, I think so, but it came with effort. Does God require effort on our part? I don't know the answer to that, I do know the Bible uses words like repentance which requires a change, it talks about loving people, it talks about realizing the benefits and gifts of others. It speaks of the body and importance of people using their individual gifts and coming together. I love that about bands in particular, it isn't really about one person, it is about a group of people, with different talents and abilities coming together to make something beautiful. It is as we do that, be it in music or in life, that we build bridges. We can show the world the beauty of working through mistakes and yes, maybe, just maybe, that in life, redemption is possible.

The following is the video for Pastor Mike and the Demon Slayer Blues Band first video release of On My Knees, so far on all formats, receiving over one million views.

Urgent Call for Support

Every now and then I send out a request for support. It's been awhile but the need now is actually greater than it's ever been. Let me be clear, I don't like doing it, there is always one like William who recently talked about how I needed to get a real job, needed to quit being an underachiever and "quit playing music for drunks" among numerous other attacks. This despite the ministry that takes place among some of those "drunks" aka as regular folks who need to know Jesus and that Jesus loves.

A few things about the last year. Regular donations over the last few years have gone from at one time $600 a month to now, $0. Covid was a huge part of this. As you know, if you have followed my work, the people I have been blessed to provide ministry to often times don't have money. So it involves me doing things like the following, just within the last three months:

  • providing online counseling services to persons contemplating suicide which involves being online with them, or on the phone while at the same time in immediate need cases online with local authorities.  My knowledge in this area gets immediate attention from Law Enforcement. As a result in the last 3 months, numerous individuals talked down, 3 individuals where the authorities went and stopped a "serious" attempt and one case unfortunately, where the authorities did not get there in time and the person committed suicide. Believe me, it pains me to this day knowing the efforts I made to save and help this person, even offering to drive to Wyoming to be with them.
  • Since December I have housed 3 homeless people, although I said I wouldn't do it again. It costs approximately $300 a month to house a homeless person here.  None of the 3 paid anything and in one instance I had one steal a bunch of stuff some of them that belonged to Mary Jane. In all of these cases I supplemented and paid out of pocket the cost of keeping them here. That will be changing as I am not so certain if I can do this again. I certainly can't afford it without major financial help.
  • There are homeless persons on the street I have helped and assisted, be it with musical counseling and assistance or just being a friend and thanks to FEMA giving advice and masks related to COVID, so far some 1,200 masks.
  • There are things like hospital visits to individuals who have followed me online and consider me their "pastor" even though I still have a hard time considering myself a pastor.
  • Then as of late the writing and reviews have started again. I know some will not see this as a ministry, but if you ever take the time to read those reviews you will see points of discussion that points to Christ, yet isn't preachy. Some would be amazed at the doors of conversation this has brought about. To the point of praying in a smoking area at a local bar with people on several occasions and even those in the arts community who call me Pastor Mike and tells me how much they appreciate me because I am not like other "preachers" I am "real."
  •  There is much more that goes on, on a daily basis, sharing my faith in a real, but honestly broken way, (believe me, I am the first to admit my shortcomings and failures.
  • I am also so grateful that the continued work with my band Pastor Mike and the Demon Slayer Blues Band continues. While I am receiving some royalties for world wide air-play it amounts to less than $20 a month. As musicians will tell you, for playing purposes, this is really good but not enough to live on.
  • The video On My Knees has now been seen close to 1 Million times world wide on various formats, the gospel message on that video is abundantly clear.
  • My music has been played in approximately 48 States and now in over 115 countries. While there are no "hits" and work to be done for live performances, rest assured, as my band will tell you or anyone who has seen us. In the bars and clubs we have played, the love of God is always mentioned, displayed and clearly presented. Yet because I am seen as "Real", it is received.
  • There is much more from individual spiritual counseling, videos and more that is taking place on a daily basis.

Now here is the reality. Currently I have monthly expenses at around $2,200 a month. That is with no medical benefits or salary or anything of the sort. I currently get $1,800 a month from Spousal Death Benefits, a bit of retirement, and a little outside earnings. As you can tell, the math don't add up. Currently, for the first time in 3 years, the bank account has less than $1,000 in it.

Last month, there was approximately $500 in support that came in from individuals. One specifically requested that their $300 gift go to me, which I appreciated and as hard as it was, respected, the other individuals $200 went right into the bank for the ministry.

On top of all of this, also please consider that none of this includes the now close to $500,000 of medical bills I have due to the quadruple bypass heart surgery where the doctors assured me that with those arteries being blocked 100% I had very little time to live. I am paying about 6 medical facilities between $10 and $25 a month for a total of $150 a month that I didn't expect to be paying.  This is above and beyond the operational expenses for The Virtual Pew / Mosaic including living expenses. Neither is included though that my lawnmower and weed eater among other things was stolen and I had to purchase new ones this last month.

I don't like asking for help it makes me feel like a moocher and is something not in my nature. I have had many people tell me that there are many ministries who does much less but brings in thousands a month because they are good at it. Well, I'm not good at it and I am not worried about having things for myself. I do have a few subscriptions like my $20 a month which allows me to do up to 3 movie reviews a week, my streaming subscriptions at about $30 a month and my car wash subscription at $19 a month. Outside of that, there really isn't anything else for my self other than getting with my band mates and playing music, but, I recognize, without help, I am in trouble.

Here is what I am asking you to consider: Would you consider supporting this ministry on a monthly basis?  Any monthly donation would be huge and of great benefit. I am also asking that you make that donation not to me but to either The Virtual Pew or Mosaic, preferably, to Mosaic. That gift is tax-deductable and goes to the immediate needs and operational expenses of ministry.

If not able to do a monthly gift in any amount, can you consider a one time gift in any amount?  Again, we praise and thank God for any donations that come in. They are so much appreciated as it allows me to do the ministry God has called me to do.

You can make contributions in several ways. I would ask first and foremost to make sure that if making a gift online that you specify that it is for The Virtual Pew / Mosaic.  That way it is easier to manage funds.

If mailing a gift the address is: Mosaic / The Virtual Pew, 1249 North Saint Francis, Wichita Kansas 67214

You can also give online via pay pal to - The Virtual Pew - mike@furches.org or Mosaic - mikefurches@yahoo.com

You can also give via cash app at $MichaelFurches

As a side bar, my health outside of allergies right now is doing great, my blood sugars over the last 2 years have gone from averaging 300 to now averaging 100 and I've lost some 50+ pounds and still losing weight.  I feel good and look forward to hopefully at the end of May seeing my daughter and grandson in Ohio for the first time since Mary Jane went to be with the Lord. My son Nathan has come through and I see him on a regular basis but have not seen my granddaughter now in over a year because the mother refuses to let me or my son see her even though he has joint custody and has been paying child support. That will be going to court in the near future as my son has already contacted an attorney.  I am also still waiting on 2 cases before the courts, one the contractors that robbed us and did the poor job on the renovations and the other a Grand Theft Felony case against the person stealing things here from the house. While I can forgive, it does not mean that people aren't held responsible.

The band continues to improve and we are also currently looking for a vehicle to travel and tour in. I continue to be excited about bringing the message of Pastor Mike and the Demon Slayer Blues Band to folks and we are open to playing wherever. The band and radio show I do weekly at KFH are among the highlights of my week as they are some me and enjoyable time while at the same time sharing Good News and happy moments.

Thank you again for your time, I very much do appreciate it and God bless you.

The Loss of a Porn Star I Knew and Loved

A number of years ago I did an article that garnished a lot of national attention called, "Am I Going To Hell Because I love Rob Zombie and Sky Lopez?"  Rob Zombie is a popular rock artist and movie maker and at the time Sky Lopez was a porn star who had reportedly just become a Christian. From that article came another article of interviews with the two, one of those, Rob Zombie actually contacted me after hearing about the initial article. But something else happened after that article that I have not written about since, and again, we're talking quite a few years ago.

Right after the publication of that initial article and those interviews I came into contact with and developed a online relationship that had a number of conversations, privately, online, and via on occasion via phone with the creator of Pink Cross Foundation, a ministry Shelley Lubben where she stated she assisted women coming out of the pornography industry. Shelley herself was a former porn star who had reportedly become a Christian. She would share her testimony across the country at conferences, radio and television programs and many times on nationally viewed programs.

For whatever reason Shelley seemed to take interest in the compassion I had shown for Sky Lopez. I was impressed that she saw enough value in the ministry work I was doing to throw some support and advice my way. It wasn't that I was doing any work specifically in ministry to porn stars. I just thought it was important that as a Christian I exemplified and showed the importance of loving people no matter where they had come from and what life they had, or lived. I was reminded of the Bible passage, Romans 5:8: but God showed how much He loved us by having Christ die for us, even though we were sinful.

I still hold to those values, to the concept that we are to love unconditionally, whosoever. It is a concept that unfortunately many Christians don't seem to live by or follow. Sure, often times lip service is given but actually following through seems to fall short. Even worse at times is the judgment and assumptions others make towards those that try to live by this standard. I will guarantee you for example, there is judgment already being made by some about me and this article because I am talking about former porn stars, forget the jest of what the article is really all about.

I kept in contact with Shelley for a number of years, there was a time I was communicating with one of the porn stars who had made a decision to follow Christ that Shelley was aware of. I told the lady that she needed to make sure to as much as possible stay away from issues related to her former life and to as much as possible to focus mainly on Jesus. Shelley felt the need to rebuke me, telling me I shouldn't be telling people to stay away from their former acquaintances and associates in the porn industry because they needed those contacts and could be used or helped. It was all kind of cryptic to be honest about it and I didn't know what to think about it. I felt she was wrong and while it wasn't a personal thing it was something that caused me to wonder about the advice she was giving and ultimately, yes, doing in her "ministry."

Later on Shelley started going through a number of issues that she was vocal about. There was relationship needs as well as financial needs. On a couple of occasions I donated to some of the financial needs she had expressed. I continued to follow her and had an occasional conversation, but, I was starting to have some concerns.

It was a number of years ago now that I begin to see individuals becoming more critical of Shelley and talking about how her ministry was fake and that she had exaggerated her story over the years as well as what she had done in the industry. There was no doubt she had been involved in porn but the extent of her involvement to obtain "star" status was debatable. The other point of concern was that she had raised money on occasion to assist certain people in the industry, yet they never received the finances. Much of this can still be seen online but there was more. She was having relationship issues with numerous people, a nasty divorce and more was going on.

Now don't get me wrong, Christians are not immune to difficulties, divorce and hard times. They should however be seeking a deeper relationship with Jesus through those difficulties. Truth is, after a period of time and questions, we will never know what was really going on with Shelley because she, after becoming destitute died from a drug overdose in a trailer park she lived in in California on February 9, 2019.

I've struggled over the last 2 years as I continued to find more information and wondered, what could I have done? What could any of us have done? What were the mitigating factors in her decisions?  What was real about Shelley? I could keep on asking questions and a large number of them could be about me as much as they are about Shelley.

In life we don't have all of the answers or solutions. The only solution I know is that Jesus is the answer. He broke down the simplicity of how we find purpose, meaning and joy in life. It is as simple as Love Him, (God through Christ) and Love Them, the people we come into contact with. That love for others is unconditional. It isn't without pain or disagreement at times but it is nonetheless, love. In today's world, we see a lot of pain and conflict. There is clearly disagreement but Shelley is an example that life is fragile.

I've seen the fragility of life in so many ways. I now am alone 90% of the time. It is something I never thought I would experience but with of the loss of my dear wife Mary Jane. Then the isolation from the season of covid. Then with social media, people find interacting via text, online, and so forth easier than face to face. Unfortunately, we lose something needed in life, relationship. Even though Adam walked with God, God still saw his need for human companionship. In today's world, we make excuses to not experience meaningful relationship. I think Shelley needed that and whether her own, or the fault of others, she ended her life and I still have questions.

As my own loneliness grows I wonder about things like this and lately a lot about Shelley because she is one of many. Do we care? Will we be there for others? Will we take seriously the concept of Loving Him, and Loving Them? Or, will we just go on in life with the status quo where others just don't matter? I feel most of the times that others will just go on, offering lip service but not really making the sacrifice of taking up their cross and following Jesus on a daily basis. I pray I am wrong.
