Daily Journal for The Recovery From Religious Abuse Day 5

While I don’t think I have been abused by religion, I am taking the time to do the exercises as outlined in the book; Recovering From Religious Abuse, 11 Steps to Spiritual Freedom written by: Jack Watts. I do know I have been hurt by religion, but hurt and abuse as described and presented in the book, and I believe are two different things. I will admit, one of my greatest concerns is that I may have at times been an abuser. I don’t think I have been but this journey will hopefully help me understand where I am at, and in the process, help others as I journal each day of the steps outlined in the book.

The truth is, sometimes it is easier to throw a pity party than it is to deal with the circumstance at hand and make the situation better. I am guilty, have been guilty of it many times before. What does that say about my confidence in the ability of God to work things out? What does it say about my focus on what God has done for me?

It is easy to focus at times on the negative, the wrongs in life that surround us, but it doesn’t change the reality that God is there, all the time, and all the time, God is there. God wants more for me, but am I willing to let him give me more, and am I willing to stop wallowing in the pity and difficulty of life to accept and understand the good God has for me?

I have seen God work in my life in this area, I am not as bad as I used to be, but I am not as good here as I should be. I realize there is more for God to do on and through me regarding my own willingness to wallow in the wrongs, and the difficult times. I need to look more at the positive and promise that only comes from God.

Father, help me see the goodness of the situation I am in. I realize that in doing that and in finding the balance of honesty, I am more likely to help people than complaining all of the time. I want to celebrate all you have done for me, help me see the reasons for those celebrations.
