Daily Journal for The Recovery From Religious Abuse Day 81

Today starts a new day; I realize I have been abused by religion. It took me through Day 8, 9 before realizing this, but I am glad I did. You can go back to see my comments on Day 8 and 9 to see what I am speaking of. I am taking the time to do the exercises as outlined in the book; Recovering From Religious Abuse, 11 Steps to Spiritual Freedom written by: Jack Watts. While I know that hurt and abuse as described and presented in the book are two different things, I have come to the understanding that in regards to taking advantage of me I have been abused. I admit, one of my concerns is I may have at times also abused religion. I don’t think I have but this journey will help me understand where I am at and in the process help others as I journal each day with the steps outlined in the book.

One of the ways I am convinced God exists is that sometimes, things happen that just can’t be coincidence. Today is such an occasion. I have found myself speaking on a subject the last few weeks that isn’t all that typical, yet today, as an affirmation of those discussions and presentations, the reading today touches on the subject. There has to be divine intervention because the coincidences just can’t be coincidence.

It is so easy in life to place oneself above another, after all, there are foreman at factories, managers at department stores, bosses on construction sites, and it seems as if there is always someone in charge, exercising their ‘authority.’ Unfortunately, people of faith don’t seem to be any different, we have people who think they are in charge and take control, yet for those of us who have been at the bad end of their whipping stick, we wonder; ‘Where is the loving servant of Jesus in their attitude?’

I admit, there are times I find myself in a position of ‘authority.’ I am reminded of my faith tradition that sees one as an equal in the realm of God, one that says a follower of Jesus is called to servant leadership, that belief is called; ‘The Priesthood of Believers.’ Those who follow Jesus are in this together, as equal heirs. In that act of servitude to others, there is to be an attitude and act of love towards all people, no matter who they are.

The beauty of Jesus having the compassion towards the poor he did is that if he can love the least of these, he can love us all. There is another beauty though, that is that in our poverty, (whether spiritual or literal) we can find ourselves experiencing Jesus. We realize, the things that matter, are found in Jesus. If we love, the things we need and desire are easier to find. My hope and prayer today is this, I hope God reminds me that above all, I should love.

Beloved let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. ~ 1 John 4:7

Be hospitable to one another without complaint. As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. Whoever speaks, is to do so as one who is speaking the utterances of God; whoever serves is to do so as one who is serving by the strength which God supplies; so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belongs the glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen ~ 1 Peter 4: 9-11

I will admit, one of my greatest concerns is I may have at times abused religion. I don’t think I have but this journey will help me understand where I am at and in the process help others as I journal each day with the steps outlined in the book.

Today’s readings looks at concepts of witnessing and the importance of living a life in the way God wants and at the same time, realizing it is God who should be our focus. As we come close to God we are able to do more than we expected of ourselves.

I love the concepts that we are to live our lives in such a way that our lives do the teaching. I don’t know if I have always succeeded at this. I know the closer I get to Jesus, the more I love others with my actions and my life speaks. I am not a ‘tract’ kind of Christian who witnesses by tracts. I know I ultimately have to use words to give an explanation as to why I live the life I do. When I do that, I can’t ignore the role Jesus has played in my life. Ultimately, I need to use words, but those words carry more impact when my life supports them. I have to walk my talk, if my talk is to be effective.

God has done a lot for me over the years. I have learned to experience the joy and live in a way that results in people talking to me about my faith. I don’t spend my time preaching to them, it is a conversation, a respectful thing where I don’t compromise my beliefs, but I am respected for those beliefs.

Walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law. Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are; immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and these things like these, of which I forewarn you just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control,; against such things there is no law. Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit ~ Galatians 5:16

I am taking the time to do the exercises as outlined in the book; Recovering From Religious Abuse, 11 Steps to Spiritual Freedom written by: Jack Watts. While I know that hurt and abuse as described and presented in the book are two different things, I have come to the understanding that in regards to taking advantage of me I have in fact been abused. I will admit, one of my greatest concerns is I may have at times abused religion. I don’t think I have but this journey will help me understand where I am at and in the process help others as I journal each day with the steps outlined in the book.

Today I start the 11th and final step of the process within the journal process for the book, Recovering From Religious Abuse, 11 Steps To Spiritual Freedom. I started this journey some months back and am grateful that in many ways I had started my own journey to recovery earlier with the writing of my book, The Keystone Kid. I wish I would have had this book years ago when I struggled with my own recovery. I realize now, that the understanding of who God is, and relying and trusting on Him is critical, if not key to the recovery process.

As I think back on my walk with Christ over the years I reflect on things that have stuck with me like, ‘Preach the Gospel, and if necessary use words,’ or ‘let my life be the light that shines on a hill,’ or even the recognition that when observing Jesus’ interactions with others, he didn’t beat them over the head with his message, and most of the time they actually initiated the conversation with him. I have realized, my life if lived in a loving way with God, will result in others asking me about my faith. For those that know the horrors of my life, they find it hard to believe because I have moved to where I am no longer the person I was. God lives in me and I have a loving, lasting relationship with the creator of the universe.

In that relationship I have found security that can’t be explained. While others seek to tear down, destroy, or ruin the ministry I am involved in, they simply don’t understand, I have peace with the creator because I have a relationship with him. With that relationship, comes an understanding that no matter what anyone else says or does, I have peace because I serve a creator who gives peace.

This process of living for, sharing Jesus with others has moved me over the years; it is the single thing that drives me to keep on doing what I do, not to proselytize of beat people over the head, but to share a love and forgiveness that awaits them that can’t be understood unless it is experienced. I am grateful that years ago I learned to surrender in order to experience the goodness of God. I make mistakes, I may even forget, but I am always drawn back to the goodness of God that sets me free.

Do everything without complaining and arguing, so that no one can criticize you. Live clean, innocent lives as children of God, shining like bright lights in a world full of crooked and perverse people. ~ Philippians 2: 14, 15

Since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. ~ Hebrews 12: 1 – 3

He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or epochs which the Father has fixed by His own authority; but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest parts of the earth.”

And after he had said these things, He was lifted up while they were looking on, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. ~ Acts 1: 7-9

I don’t think I have but this journey will help me understand where I am at and in the process help others as I journal each day with the steps outlined in the book.

Today I look at the passage from two perspectives, one as a pastor, hoping and praying that in my willingness to confront others in the things I am called to do that I haven’t abused anyone, the other as one who has gone through experiences of judgment from others who have carried out their faith in an abusive way towards me. I have to realize and pray about the areas I have done wrong, and the wrongs that have been done towards me. I want to be the person God wants me to be as He still has a plan for me.

I have had to have a confidence in who I am because of Christ for a large part of my life, unfortunately, I have only begin to exercise that belief in the last 10 or so years. Even then, I still find myself in need of improvement in recognizing that God isn’t done with me. I need to live each day in the service of God, loving others, and doing something about the plight of those God has called me to minister to. I am grateful that in those areas, I still find excitement.

In areas where I am weak, quick to condemn, or quick to judge, I need to make sure I always step back, reevaluate the decision and action before me and make sure I behave and act as Jesus would have me. In some situations, it may mean a loving confrontation, in others; it may mean remaining silent and letting God, through His Holy Spirit do their job. In others, it may mean saying or doing something different than I initially thought.

I have come to realize, God is not done with me. While I am over the half way hump of life, God still has work to do through me. I am grateful for the work I do; it is possible that after my life on this earth, God can still use me through my writings or present actions. I pray what I do is done the way God desires, not just in my actions towards others as a pastor, but as a person who has a concern for those who have been abused.

‘I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.’ – Romans 8: 38, 39

You have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, ‘Abba Father!’ The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him. – Romans 8: 15-17

We know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren; and those whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified.
What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us? – Romans 8: 28-31

Truth is, and I know I have done it; sometimes it seems as if I think the world owes me a nice bottle of whine (pun intended) on a silver platter. I am glad I am not at this state as much as I used to be, I can’t help but think it may make me more likeable to those I come into contact with.

Unfortunately, there are many who still think that because of their situation, because of their environment, the world owes them. Abuse is a characteristic that doesn’t help this attitude, we know we have been done wrong, we know others are trying to exercise what they think is their spiritual wisdom or ‘authority.’ It is time to stand up though, not in the area of complaining, but in the area of challenging and moving forward, expecting, and knowing, it rains on the just and the unjust. In other words, yes it is true, bad crap happens to good people and sometimes there is nothing we can do about it because God loves us so much, he created us with a mind of our own that allows these things called humans to at times, do stupid things, even things that hurt other people. The alternative would have been for God to create robots, but if he had done that, we would have no freedoms of our own to do anything.

While others have done wrong to me, I have to get over it and move on; doing what I know is best and what God would have me do. I think the thing that helped me in regards to this was my mother. While she was one of my abusers, I always focused on myself. It wasn’t until close to her death that some things I had suspected were confirmed. It was as I looked at her life, her own abuse, that I considered the life she had led. I think the difference for me is I had God in my life. I am still working on areas of hurt, confusion and more. Yet, I needed to look at and consider my mother. It was as I was able to forgive and find a love for her that ultimately I begin to experience the fullness of God’s mercy and call on my life.

I am not saying any of us should forget the pain, nor should we ignore the situations, and hurt, or like those who have abused us. I am saying this, as I have learned to look at those who have hurt me through eyes of compassion and an attempt to understand them, I am able to find peace in my life and move on. It isn’t easy, heck at times it seems nearly impossible, but it is for my benefit.

I don’t expect God to ‘do everything for me’ and/or ‘make life wonderful.’ I realize the nature of the fallen world we live in and I appreciate the freedoms God has given me. That doesn’t mean it is easy though, the cross Christ calls for me to carry daily wasn’t easy for him either. Was it worth it though? I think that for the sake of relationship, and seeing others come to the place of salvation, it was absolutely worth it and I am grateful. I can only imagine, if I give in, I can see his message of love carried on to others with the forgiveness and sacrifice I offer them. I pray that God helps me do that, even in the hard times, and man oh man, I know there are places, with people I need to do that today because their intent on tearing my life apart, or hurting me isn’t God’s intent, but it is God’s intent that we love, even our enemies and those who would do us harm.

That I may know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death; in order that I may attain to the resurrection from the dead. ~ Philippians 3: 10, 11

I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us. Fr the anxious longing of the creation waits eagerly for the revealing of the sons of God. ~ Romans 8: 18, 19

Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing, as though some strange thing were happening to you; but to the degree that you share the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing, so that also at the revelation of His glory you will rejoice with exultation. ~ 1 Peter 4: 12, 13

Today starts a new day; I realize that I have been abused by religion. It took me through Day 8, 9 before I realized this, but I am glad I did. You can go back to see my comments on Day 8 and 9 to see what I am speaking of. I am taking the time to do the exercises as outlined in the book; Recovering From Religious Abuse, 11 Steps to Spiritual Freedom written by: Jack Watts. While I know that hurt and abuse as described and presented in the book are two different things, I have come to the understanding that in regards to taking advantage of me I have in fact been abused. I will admit, one of my greatest concerns is I may have at times abused religion. I don’t think I have but this journey will help me understand where I am at and in the process help others as I journal each day with the steps outlined in the book.

I have to tell you, as of late, life has been hectic, and at times, almost more than I can handle. I can say that this has come about since my desire to dedicate myself to God, but there were times of building and growing that wasn’t so bad and was even enjoyable. Lately though; let me tell you, being the pastor of a church, promoting a book, finishing the production of a short movie, dealing with personalities, looking for a new building for the church and raising funds for it, running a homeless program through the church, and I could go on, to help illustrate the point but it just seems like more than I can manage.

Dealing with the relationships I am involved in carries a weight, especially the broken ones. I find myself leaning on God in such a way as to let him support all of the difficulties I bear. I sometimes forget, or find reason to not lean on God, but thankfully I seem to always come to the point where I do. Sometimes it is after I have bore more than I needed or got to the point I just couldn’t do any more. I have found, God is there every time.

I am grateful that as I have grown in this area. I have learned to turn things over to God sooner. I have realized he is there to care of me, love me, and keep me from unbearable pain. That doesn’t mean it isn’t hard, it just means he is there to help me endure the pain.

I know God will continue to bless me. While others intend to do harm, I am amazed how God always comes through. My relationship with God is at the best place in a very long time. I look at my surroundings, situations, and provisions, and know God is there, not just in these things though, my emotions, thoughts and reality. God is real, I stand by him and he takes care of me. For that I am grateful, God is always there, standing by me.

We can rejoice when we run into problems and trials, they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love. ~ Romans 5: 3-5

Just as the sufferings of Christ are ours in abundance, so also our comfort is abundant through Christ. But if we are afflicted, it is for our comfort and salvation; as if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which is effective in the patient enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer; and our hope for you is firmly grounded, knowing that as you are sharers of our sufferings, so also you are sharers of our comfort. ~ 2 Corinthians 1:5-7

Today starts a new day; I realize that I have been abused by religion. It took me through Day 8, 9 before I realized this, but I am glad I did. I am taking the time to do the exercises as outlined in the book; Recovering From Religious Abuse, 11 Steps to Spiritual Freedom written by: Jack Watts. While I know that hurt and abuse as described and presented in the book are two different things, I have come to the understanding that in regards to taking advantage of me I have in fact been abused. I will admit, one of my greatest concerns is I may have at times abused religion. I don’t think I have but this journey will help me understand where I am at and in the process help others as I journal each day with the steps outlined in the book.

Over the years I have spoken to many people who have gone through religious abuse. Many of them have turned their backs on the church and some on God, but there are those who recognize that the God presented to them by their abusers is not from the Holy Spirit nor is it in fact, God. If anything, those who abuse and refuse to abide by the concept of love is seen by many outside of the faith, and those who walk with God in the faith, as fools. Unfortunately, many people who consider themselves Christian fall into this category. Those who hurt others so badly think they know God so well they have to project their beliefs on others. They use the opinions of others about them regarding their inappropriate actions as a badge of honor because the last thing they want to admit is they haven’t practiced, lived in, or done the things of God. They make excuses to remain in their pharisaic mindset.

I have unfortunately ran into many of those abusers, they misinterpret scripture, they quit churches and have a history which shows they have issues relating to others in a positive way, especially those outside of the church or those they disagree with within the church. They think they are the tools the Holy Spirit uses to accomplish God’s purpose, but ultimately it is their own purpose, thoughts, and egos that are being boosted.

I have discovered something some of the abusers have yet to discover, or likely never will unless they surrender to the teachings of Jesus, including the loving whosoever. Those of us who have found strength in God’s love no longer yield to, or spend much time concerned about their judgment and rejection. For those who have been abused, I encourage you to find peace in God. I know from experience, God delivers peace.

Let me say, there is a movement of churches wanting to make a difference, I am grateful for that. Those who reject us and practice their pharisaic beliefs will never feel comfortable around people who love. The churches making a difference are filled with people who have been hurt by religious dogmas. There is peace that passes all understanding that God gives us. It is worth it because it is in that peace that we experience the freedom God has for us. For that, I am grateful.

For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. ~ Romans 8:38, 39

Let the wicked change their ways and banish the very thought of doing wrong.
Let them turn to the Lord that he may have mercy on them.
Yes, turn to our God, for he will forgive generiously.

“My Thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord.
“And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.
For just as the heavens are higher than the earth,
So my ways are higher than your ways
And my thoughts higher than your thoughts.” ~ Isaiah 55: 7-9

New Film The Long Walk, My Story

Over the years I have lived a life that was filled with lies, hidden agendas, and deep pain. All because I was afraid to talk about the physical and sexual abuse I experienced as a child and the life I ended up living as a result of, ‘not knowing better.’

Some will be shocked at the concept of ‘not knowing better’ regarding physical and sexual abuse, especially when the pain comes out in the victim in the form of sexual perversion, and the reality that I became a bully in my relationship with others. As I have stated for a number of years and in my book The Keystone Kid, how is a child who has never known better to have an appropriate understanding of sexuality or relationship if all they have known is abuse? They learn to hide their feelings because those who have abused them have had them hide the events of their life. Many see the life of grown survivors who has not dealt with the abuse, has a hidden agenda due to embarrassment, pain, and more. Many in my life could see through the pain, and anger, while some knew, others couldn’t. In my own healing, my telling of my story, people now understand and many have been helped by my willingness to share my story.

One of the things people ask is if the book The Keystone Kid, or the short movie, The Long Walk is about anger, revenge, hate or what? I challenge, it is about none of those things; it is about the ability to heal through the power of forgiveness. It was through the ability to forgive, that I found healing, strength, and the ability to move on with life, as a new man. That healing for me came later than I would have liked. I am blessed that my story has helped others experience healing earlier than they thought possible.

The short film The Long Walk was made with money from the inheritance from my mother’s death. She was one of my abusers, thus putting me in the unique position of being a male who was abused by various individuals, including their mother. That reality hasn’t been easy, but I have to say, prior to my mother’s death, I learned to forgive, told her that, and was blessed to know of her own faith decision prior to her death and heard her tell me she was sorry and that she loved me. At that point I was able to tell her that I loved her for the first time in over 30 years. It was late in life, but my willingness to forgive and love enabled me to do that. I learned a lot about my mother, including her own issues and abuse. There are stories involved with many that make it harder to judge others.

The Long Walk short film was accepted as a project for Amazon’s Kickstarter. They accept less than ½ of requests and while we had completed the principal shooting, the Kickstarter project is allowing us to finish up the professional make up of the product which will have ample special features, enter the film into film festivals, and start the funding towards the feature film. There are 5 days left in the project and we hope that over this last weekend to bring about awareness to the project and to the issue surrounding abuse. I want people to know, there is hope and healing, I know, I have experienced it. It started with forgiveness, something that wasn’t easy, but required. That doesn’t mean I have forgotten the pain or at times don’t still experience the pain, but the scars are a reminder of the healing and the person I once was. I am a new creature thanks to the power of God and I have found, it is possible to love even those who would do us harm. That isn’t by our power that we are able to do that, it is only from the power of God. He is still changing lives, he is still providing healing, I am grateful!

Today starts Step 10 of the 11 Step Journey. For this session there is a focus on the reality that God has a purpose for me, I can choose good over evil in my life.

I am confident that for each person that chooses God, that while the journey may be difficult at times, God changes lives and can make things better. I am grateful that I begin the process of seeking healing in my life some time ago. I know for a fact, I am not the same person I used to be. I also know God is not a respecter of persons, if he will change my life for the better, he will change others lives for the better.

I have faith that God will take care of me on my life journey. Over the years some have seen my wife and I as people of faith; not in the charismatic, give me money kind of way, but in the, ‘we know God is going to take care of us,’ way. We know that when we are faithful in the little things, God is faithful in the big things. I have learned that when we practice faith, we learn that we don’t act so much in faith as we do in knowledge. We know when we do what seems like the impossible, trusting God, He will come through and do as he promised. I still need to practice that in my life in all areas related to the abuse I have gone through, whether physical and sexual or abuse from the Church.

I know God is all he says he is, he comes through for me, and in this area of faith, I know God can, and has used that which was meant for evil for good. He has made it clear, there are more benefits to doing good than doing evil.

Jesus answered and said to them, ‘Truly I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but even if you say to the mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ it will happen. And all things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.’ ~ Matthew 21: 21, 22

I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me. ~ Galatians 2:20

I will admit, one of my greatest concerns is I may have at times abused religion. Today I have to admit, I have people I need to forgive and am having some trouble doing it. I recently had a person I thought was a real friend walk away, he walked away despite the sacrifices my family and I had made on his and his families behalf. The truth is, it hurt, I have no idea why, but he refuses to answer emails, concerns or meet with me for any reason. It hurts and it comes from someone I never expected.

I have learned over the years that I need to let this person go of what I believe is their sin against me and at that point, move on, but it isn’t easy. I have done this in the past and with some situations and people it isn’t so bad, but my life in the ‘religious’ world has me experiencing hurt, pain, rejection and a reason to not trust. I realize I’m not the only one who has experienced this, but in some situations like the one I am in now, I am at a loss, do I tell the person I forgive them and in the process how much they hurt me, or just move on?

I know I need to move on and let go. In this situation, I did nothing wrong, and if anything was taken wrong, I have apologized and asked for forgiveness already, at this point, it is on them to see if they honor and respect the concept of Christian community, brotherhood and so forth. I know and have peace in my heart, I did nothing wrong, that isn’t to say they didn’t perceive something to be wrong, but it was never intended. I can’t control what anyone else does; I can only control what I do. I know my security is in God. I can trust God, I would love to trust the human species, I just don’t know if I can.

My prayer is; God I know I need to forgive, it isn’t easy though. I ask that you and your Spirit help me forgive as you have required. Help me be the person I need to be so I can be free to move on and let go of the pain and hurt.

If you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions. ~ Matthew 6: 14, 15

Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you. ~ Ephesians 4: 31, 32

Daily Journal for The Recovery From Religious Abuse Day 69

Today starts a new day; I realize that I have been abused by religion. It took me through Day 8, 9 before I realized this, but I am glad I did. You can go back to see my comments on Day 8 and 9 to see what I am speaking of. I am taking the time to do the exercises as outlined in the book; Recovering From Religious Abuse, 11 Steps to Spiritual Freedom written by: Jack Watts. While I know that hurt and abuse as described and presented in the book are two different things, I have come to the understanding that in regards to taking advantage of me I have in fact been abused. I will admit, one of my greatest concerns is I may have at times abused religion. I don’t think I have but this journey will help me understand where I am at and in the process help others as I journal each day with the steps outlined in the book.

As I have gotten older and experienced abuse, I don’t know if those who have abused me really understand my perspective of where they are at. While I have been hurt by many people, I have finally gotten to the place that I am able to forgive them, and in that, feel a little sorry for them, especially if they hold on to their resentment, attitudes, and actions. It isn’t that I feel sorry for them because they are less of a person than me, but I feel sorry for them because I know how much God could use them if they were to let go and let God. The fact is, I chose to forgive them, and because of that choice, I am a better person, not better than them, but better because God has provided healing.

I know that forgiving people for many years was one of the hardest things to do, it is still difficult, but I have learned, if I forgive, move on and just don’t give their actions the time or thought, God can do a lot more through me. I can never do anything on my own, but surrender to God. As I surrender to God, forgive others, then God works and then as a result of God working in my life I experience a better attitude, a better spiritual place and a better relationship with God.

I learned over the years that when I hold on to anger, malice, and the sins against me, then I am a slave to that sin and sinful act. I choose not to be at that place. It is the place the short movie The Long Walk ends in fact; it is a place where I realize that when I was able to forgive, God set me free. The movie ends in a powerful way as to the importance of this concept; it isn’t one everyone wants to hear because some people find more joy in misery than they do freedom. I am not one of those; God has made me free, free indeed!

Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ has also forgiven you. ~ Ephesians 4:31, 32

How blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven,
Whose sin is covered!
How blessed is the man to whom the Lord does not impute iniquity,
And in whose spirit there is no deceit!
When I kept silent about my sin, my body wasted away
Through my groaning all day long.
For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me;
My vitality was drained away as with the fever heat of summer.
I acknowledge my sin to You,
And my iniquity I did not hide;
I said, ‘I will confess my transgressions to the Lord’;
And You forgave the guilt of my sin. ~ Psalm 32: 1-5

I am taking the time to do the exercises as outlined in the book; Recovering From Religious Abuse, 11 Steps to Spiritual Freedom written by: Jack Watts. While I know that hurt and abuse as described and presented in the book are two different things, I have come to the understanding that in regards to taking advantage of me I have in fact been abused. I will admit, one of my greatest concerns is I may have at times abused religion. I don’t think I have but this journey will help me understand where I am at and in the process help others as I journal each day with the steps outlined in the book.

One of the things I did some time ago was to forgive those who abused me, whether, physically, sexually, of spiritually. It was one of the best things I have done. I don’t know if those I have forgiven fully understand the forgiveness that has been offered, mainly because a part of my ministry is helping others who have been abused. There is an assumption that because I choose to help others, that I haven’t forgiven them. This couldn’t be further from the truth.

I know that abuse is a cyclical thing, my abusers; at least many if not all of them were abused themselves, especially those sexually abused, but not just them, many others I have come into contact with that has been spiritually abused. The cycle is something hard to understand unless you have been there. I am grateful that God gave me the courage and ability to address the abuse in my life. I decided it would stop in my life. That isn’t to say it has been easy, it hasn’t, but it is to say, that to get to a place of forgiveness is to discover a place God can work. I am grateful that I hear daily from people who have been blessed by the work God has given me. While I care for those I have forgiven, if they aren’t okay with my work then that is on them. I’m not wishing anything negative on them; instead, I am finding satisfaction in doing the things God has done for, and through me. God has truly taken the tragic events of my life, the abuse of all types, and allowed me to see him work.

There is much good that has come about through my abuse, it isn’t to say I am thankful for it, I am not, but I am thankful for the work I have seen God do. He truly can take that meant for evil, and turn it around for good if we allow him to by forgiving those who have done us harm.

It was for freedom that Christ set us free. ~ Galatians 5:1

Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful. Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God. Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father. ~ Colossians 3: 14-17

I will give thanks to You, O Lord my God, with all my heart,
And will glorify Your name forever.
For Your loving kindness toward me is great,
And You have delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol. ~ Psalm 86: 12, 13

God wants us to find peace, happiness and purpose in our life. Unfortunately, the person beating us up the most which prevents these things is ourselves. In my past, and sometimes in my present, I beat myself up and it discourages me from moving on. I know my own weaknesses more and better than anyone else. I sometimes forget, God is still there and wants to help me through my pain. I am grateful I realize this, because I know through my experiences that I can go back to God when I fail. There is an old saying, ‘God isn’t done with me yet.’ I am grateful for that.

I think the biggest problem some people have had, and I have at times, is we forget God is there, we can start over, we can be forgiven for the things we have done, and God will help us move forward. I am grateful that I am not at that place today. I go there on occasion, but it is less than in the past, I think it is because I have learned, my misery is not a place I like to be.

Today as I write this, it is the late Mark Heard’s birthday. Mark was a great songwriter, thinker, and philosopher. He had his own struggles at times, but he persevered and got to the place where he could be honest about who he was. I think his struggle helped him write great songs. Today, for something different, at the conclusion of the post, I am including a video of one of Mark’s songs. Mark is gone now, but he left some great music which can help us reflect and contemplate the good God has for us.

Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. ~ Matthew 7: 7, 8

The Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord – who is Spirit – makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image. ~ 2 Corinthians 3: 17, 18

I will admit, one of my greatest concerns is I may have at times abused religion. Over the years I have come to accept myself for who I was, and more importantly, who I am as a result of the life and situations I have lived. Getting to a place of peace is a place I have enjoyed, and while I don’t know if others who have issues with my story are at that place, I am. I am happy where I am at, if others aren’t, that is more on them than me. To be the person God wants me to be is between me and God, I hope each person finds that place, but in finding it, they don’t hide, nor ignore their own experiences. There are things each of us needs to seek forgiveness for, and people to ask forgiveness from. God provides healing in that place, I am grateful I have experienced more healing than I once thought possible.

God is all powerful, he has given me strength to share, and do things I never thought possible. I know he can do that for others who choose to be set free from their past, whether a victim of abuse, or an abuser. God provides liberty and forgiveness to start over. I realize I have to have God as will anyone else to succeed over the long haul. I know I could, and at times have, slipped back to poor attitudes where the abuse in my life has more of an impact than I would like, I am grateful though, at least up to this point, I am still there, and surrendering to the things of God has. It isn’t easy but it is worth it and the reason why I have continued my walk with God for some time now.

“I know the plans that I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope.” ~ Jeremiah 29:11

Joseph said to them, “Do not be afraid, for am I in God’s place? As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result, to preserve many people alive. So therefore, do not be afraid; I will provide for you and your little ones.” So he comforted them and spoke kindly to them. ~ Genesis 50:19-21

I will admit, one of my greatest concerns is I may have at times abused religion. I don’t think I have but this journey will help me understand where I am at and in the process help others as I journal each day with the steps outlined in the book.

Today starts Step 9 of the 11 Step journey of the journal process. The focus of this section is on forgiving the abusers.

Over the years I have had to come to the realization in my own life, the issues of pain and abuse in my life had to stop with me. In some ways, that has been a very difficult thing to do, but in others, it has been liberating. That isn’t to say everything is positive in my experiences. A part of my recovery was getting to the place of being brutally honest and speaking my mind. This still isn’t easy, but I am doing a better job at it. This isn’t always received in a positive way. Folks say they would rather someone be honest as opposed to beating around the bush and never getting to the point, but when it is practiced, you learn quickly, not everyone wants honesty. In my recovery and the future of my family, it implied being honest about everything. I have also learned the importance of forgiving others; it is in part the theme of my book, The Keystone Kid and certainly the short movie, The Long Walk.

This mornings readings talk about accepting, even encouraging adversity, I don’t know if I want that, or can encourage that. It seems as if adversity comes whether I encourage it or not. I know God builds character, endurance and strength through adversity, but I don’t want to give credit for the good that abuse can do. I know this, God can use that intended for evil and encouraged by the enemy and turn it to good, but that is an entirely different scenario. I would rather say this, ‘God I don’t want adversity or struggle, but I ask that when it does occur that you use it and turn it to good as you have in the past.’ I also realize that a part of forgiving others is a way I can maintain a loving relationship, and move forward. This isn’t to deny the pain, but I know, God never has his children run.

Unfortunately the choice of running away is a path many take, it is the easy way, but it isn’t the way that leads to growth or maturity. I have experienced that from learning to forgive those who have done me wrong, both spiritually and sexually. I still have work to do, progress to make, and struggles endure but I know God has been there to build character and joy through the bad in the past, he will do so again today, and tomorrow.

We know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. ~ Romans 8:28

Today starts a new day; I realize that I have been abused by religion. It took me through Day 8, 9 before I realized this, but I am glad I did. You can go back to see my comments on Day 8 and 9 to see what I am speaking of. I am taking the time to do the exercises as outlined in the book; Recovering From Religious Abuse, 11 Steps to Spiritual Freedom written by: Jack Watts. While I know that hurt and abuse as described and presented in the book are two different things, I have come to the understanding that in regards to taking advantage of me I have in fact been abused. I will admit, one of my greatest concerns is I may have at times abused religion. I don’t think I have but this journey will help me understand where I am at and in the process help others as I journal each day with the steps outlined in the book.

In today’s process the book has me looking at pride, pride that often exists in the lives of those who have been abused. It is pride that often prevents one from sharing or confessing their sins. I have to admit, in the past that played a role in my own recovery. I don’t know if it was as much the things I was proud of as it was my attempt to be recognized. I still find myself being careful not to slip into this place, but it isn’t easy.

One of the things that have helped me is the realization that I am no better than anyone else. In my own belief system there is this concept called The Priesthood of All Believers, this belief has helped me affirm my own giftedness and experiences, but more importantly it has been a reminder that I am no better than anyone else. We are all sinners, in need of God’s grace and forgiveness, and created in the image of God. Knowing that helps me know that while others may have an arrogant, or better than though attitude, in the eyes of God we are all loved. In the realization of my own failures and my willingness to admit those failures there is healing.

While I am far from perfect in this area, I know the progress I have made over the last 30+ years while following Jesus. I realize that my sins, no matter how big or small need forgiveness. I also realize the importance, especially in the last 10 years or more of making sure that I confess and admit my sins. In my willingness to do this I have healing. That isn’t to say I am perfect, I will likely be working on this for the rest of my life, but it is easier now than last year, and is easier today than yesterday because I try to practice the confessing sin, seeing my wrongs, and trying to walk and be an imitator of Jesus. The closer I get to him, the further away I get because I realize my own imperfections and faults. That makes my heart tender and my pride or arrogance less. I realize more than ever, my story isn’t my story, it is and will continue to be, the story of what God has done for me; a worthless sinner deserving of punishment, but thankfully experiencing the grace of God.

If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth; but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves, and the truth is not in us. ~ 1 John 1: 6-8

Since we have a great High Priest who rules over God’s house, let us go into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully trusting him. For our guilty consciences have been sprinkled with Christ’s blood to make us clean, and our bodies have been washed with pure water.
Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise. ~ Hebrews 10: 21-23

I am taking the time to do the exercises as outlined in the book; Recovering From Religious Abuse, 11 Steps to Spiritual Freedom written by: Jack Watts. While I know that hurt and abuse as described and presented in the book are two different things, I have come to the understanding that in regards to taking advantage of me I have in fact been abused. I will admit, one of my greatest concerns is I may have at times abused religion. I don’t think I have but this journey will help me understand where I am at and in the process help others as I journal each day with the steps outlined in the book.

There is likely little irony today in that there are some pressing concerns I have for another couple and today is the day I normally come together with others to pray for our church and community. I just finished typing in a note at facebook that if people have prayer needs they can contact me and we will pray for them at our meeting today.

Is it any wonder that we need to confess our sins when coming to God? I think part of it is to realize that we are worthless without God and it is in and through God’s forgiveness that we have the ability to pray. It was for the sins of the world that Jesus was placed on the cross; it was through his blood, suffering, death and resurrection that we have the right to petition God. I need to know, God is much bigger than me and in reality I need to go to God because I in my own power, I have no power.

Confession is important because it is a part of what bring me to a place where God would have me. Of course that implies that I know what to confess, to have an understanding of my wrongs and how I have failed God. Today I will pray, but I will try to remember, it is through Jesus that I am able to pray, it is because of his love for me that I need to recognize my own failures and sins. It is because of those sins that Jesus died on that cross for me; it is through his resurrection and power that I have forgiveness. May I be the person God has called me to be, for without him, I really am, nothing.

Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere. ~ Ephesians 6:18

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. ~ Philippians 4: 6, 7

The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much. Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the earth for three years and six months. Then he prayed again, and the sky poured rain and the earth produced its fruit. ~ James 5: 16-18

I will admit, one of my greatest concerns is I may have at times abused religion. I don’t think I have but this journey will help me understand where I am at and in the process help others as I journal each day with the steps outlined in the book.

A number of years ago now I was meeting a pastor friend at the Ram Café in Owasso Oklahoma. I will never forget him asking, ‘What’s the matter Mike, I’m one of your pastors can’t you trust me.’ My response was quick and to the point, ‘If you knew how many pastors had hurt me and let me down you would know that I can’t trust anyone except myself and the Lord and sometimes I doubt myself.’ Having someone to trust has been a critical part of my recovery in the last months, not just recovery though, but in my ability to find peace.

I meet with that friend on a regular basis and he has become someone I can trust, it has taken some time to get to this point. I know I can trust this person and he will be honest with me, even today, I had a meeting I was not looking forward to, yet he found a way to tell me that while it may not be something I will enjoy, I need to go to it and I will be a better person because of it. This person has earned my trust so his wisdom is valuable.

In the process of developing trust I want to say it’s all on me, but I have come to realize it isn’t all on me. I don’t trust much of the time because people have given me reason to not trust. I would caution just as the book states today, make sure you are careful in deciding who you trust. After years of struggle, I have my wife, children, and no more than 2 or 3 friends I can trust. I still find myself in the dangerous place of trusting people I shouldn’t and getting hurt.

Today I pray; Father I realize my own need to have more people I can trust, I ask that you provide them. I thank you for those I can trust now, it has been a hard and long journey and even though I find myself at times doubting, you have provided those who care and who love. I thank you for that. I ask the same for others, I know I need friends and so do others.

The good man brings out of his good treasure what is good; and the evil man brings out of his evil treasure what is evil ~ Matthew 12:35

A friend is always loyal, and a brother is born to help in time of need. ~ Proverbs 17:17

There are “friends” who destroy each other, but a real friend sticks closer than a brother. ~ Proverbs 18:24

Over the years it has been difficult to find people I can trust. My book was a part of the process of bearing my soul and one of my main concerns while writing it was how people would respond not so much regarding the things done to me, but to the things I had done to others. I felt dirty, unworthy of love and I knew from experience I had been misunderstood. The journey to find one I could trust was a legitimate concern and a concern I still face.

In searching for people I can trust; honesty has been an important criterion for me. I have learned to appreciate people who are honest from the start. While I don’t like disagreement, or conflict, honesty has been important to me. I have someone now that I can have a measure of trust with. I meet with them once a week and he has been a friend, allowing me to be honest while at the same time giving caring advice. It has taken time and I think he knew it would. That level of friendship is important but I desire more. I desire someone I can do things with, even if just watching a movie.

My wife has been a friend and I appreciate that, but there is the need for friendship outside of marital relationships. I think others need that not just me. I realize it isn’t easy to obtain, it is quite difficult. It at times still has me feeling less than worthy or less than whole. I strive to see who is real, not just in an easy going way, but in the honest caring way.

Father help me, you know I desire to have friends. I recall being able to talk about anything to certain friends while growing up, most of them were friends who weren’t Christian, but they were more real than most friends I have had. Help me see value in those friendships, help me see the need, and go after the things regarding relationship with others that you would have for me.

Though good advice lies deep within the heart,
A person with understanding will draw it out.

Many will say they are loyal friends,
But who can find one who is truly reliable?

The godly walk with integrity;
Blessed are their children who follow them. ~ Proverbs 20: 5-7

Intimacy, I have to tell you, I have longed for it for so long! As a mental health professional and an Executive Director, it was hard to find, as a pastor intimacy is even harder to find. I know people will likely find that a shock, but it is the truth. It is something I have realized more over the last few years, and especially since starting the journal process with this book. One of the reasons it is hard is because of the ‘manlihood’ expected in our society, but when dealing with the abuse issues and the role in life I am supposed to play at times, it becomes even more difficult. I desire intimacy, have asked for it, sought out relationships to develop it, unfortunately, seldom I have experienced it.

Over the years I have seen the value in trying to talk to others; I have learned the hard lessons that sometimes sharing too much is not a good thing. Another lesson is there are people I can’t trust for a reason. Building close relationships, friendships to have a person I can be intiment with is one of the desires of my heart, but one of the burdens of my reality. I wish someone existed, maybe they do, I just know I have seldom felt like that person was there, and the few times I have, I was hurt. Often that hurt came from people of faith who claimed to have a relationship with God. It is harder for me to trust a religious person or person of faith than many can imagine. I wish it weren’t true, but it is. I realize if this is true for me, I have little reason to believe it isn’t true for others.

I ask God to give me a friend, one I can openly share with, both on the giving and receiving end. I know I need it, I also ask it for others who have struggled with this concept.

Confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. ~ James 5:16

He who conceals his transgressions will not prosper,
But he who confesses and forsakes them will find compassion.
How blessed is the man who fears always,
But he who hardens his heart will fall into calamity. ~ Proverbs 28: 13, 14

Today’s journal entry requests that I write about the pain and difficulty of dealing with my own difficulties of dealing with my abuses, the wrongs I have done and so forth. I did this some time ago but think it is worthwhile to affirm the steps requested in the book, especially Step 7.

As I was writing my book The Keystone Kid and dealing with my past there were many transgressions on my part. I found myself not only dealing with the pain of my past as I was in many ways reliving it, I found myself doing some pretty stupid and damaging things to myself. I have spoken about those things but I don’t know if I have ever written about them. There were times as I was going through the process of dealing with the pains of my past that I honestly didn’t know if my marriage would survive. We even spoke about the likelihood of divorce. I regressed in my behavior and actions which I have greatly regretted. On one occasion, I had a friend holding my head as I threw up from drinking too much, I had other issues I dealt with, none of which were good regarding how I thought of my self, or how I behaved around others.

In many ways, this process was the most painful, difficult time of my Christian walk. I rebelled against God and was so far from being like Jesus it was ridiculous. One Easter Sunday after arguing with my wife where I spent more time away from home than at home it was on the drive to work I heard a story of Yolanda Adams on the radio. Her story had me reflect on my grandmother and the prayers she had said for me as I was growing up. I was reminded that I shouldn’t ‘throw away my grandmas prayers.’ It was then I decided to surrender to God and get my life back in order.

Over the years, I have thought, was it worth it to go through the pain? Looking back on it, I honestly don’t know how to answer the question. What I can say is I am at a better place now having dealt with the issues of my past head on. If being in a better place makes it worth it, it was worth it. It doesn’t negate the difficulty of what I went through. Things could have turned out worse than they did, thankfully they didn’t and for that, I am grateful.

Today, I know people are reading this that is dealing with this type of conflict and they know how much it hurts, and how difficult it is to deal with the issues regarding their abuse and subsequent actions. To accept the monsters we have become is not easy, but recovery, healing, and becoming whole is a better place to be. I still need healing, but I know God will continue to forgive and help me. I suspect, if he has, and will continue that for me, he will for you.

Father, thank you for forgiving me of the things I have done wrong. Thank you for being constant through the healing process in my life. I ask that you would give confidence to those who need to go through the same process for their lives. I pray they will have wisdom, and stay on the path that leads to joy and ultimately the light you can provide in their lives.

I tell you, her sins – and they are many – have been forgiven, so she has shown me much love. But a person who is forgiven little shows only a little love. – Luke 7:47

Today starts a new day; I realize that I have been abused by religion. It took me through Day 8, 9 before I realized this, but I am glad I did. You can go back to see my comments on Day 8 and 9 to see what I am speaking of. I am taking the time to do the exercises as outlined in the book; Recovering From Religious Abuse, 11 Steps to Spiritual Freedom written by: Jack Watts. While I know that hurt and abuse as described and presented in the book are two different things, I have come to the understanding that in regards to taking advantage of me I have in fact been abused. I will admit, one of my greatest concerns is I may have at times abused religion. I don’t think I have but this journey will help me understand where I am at and in the process help others as I journal each day with the steps outlined in the book.

Over the time it took me in my journaling experiences to write my own book, The Keystone Kid, years were involved, and many changes and edits took place. One of the reasons was not that the story changed but for 2 reasons, 1) I needed to fix it grammatically, 2) I had to deal with my own issues of where I had been wrong, or done stupid things in my life. You see, it is important that in my own recovery, I had to realize, I was far from perfect, and had committed sin against others. There were things where I was at fault and I needed to address them.

In my book one of the last things I corrected was in the epilogue where I dealt with where I am now and the things I learned through the process. I recognized my own issues. It was difficult. I have this fear that people will think less of me because of the stupid things I did. It hurts when there are those who ignore the pain and suffering. I guess I am saying I know the process hurts, and I wish I could say everything will work out for the best, but the truth is, it doesn’t always do that. The other side though is that from recognizing my own faults and issues, I have moved forward with integrity. I can change the potential for the future. In that regard, it is all worth it.

Father God, thank you for the forgiveness you have provided me where I have done wrong. I know I will likely do so again in the future, and I don’t say that as an excuse but to recognize I need you tomorrow, just as much as I needed you today. I truly do want to be the person you want me to be, even when I need to recognize my own faults. Father, I know I am not perfect, help me to realize that about those around me as well. Help me realize that I also fall short; it is why I need Jesus and your Holy Spirit to guide me each day. Help me be a follower and recognize the areas of my life I need to surrender.

But he who confesses and forsakes them will find compassion.
How blessed is the man who fears always,
But he who hardens his heart will fall into calamity. ~ Proverbs 28: 13, 14

I will admit, one of my greatest concerns is I may have at times abused religion. I don’t think I have but this journey will help me understand where I am at and in the process help others as I journal each day with the steps outlined in the book.

I actually start today Step 7 of the 11 Steps. As I looked at the introduction of this process, I realized, I actually did this some time ago as I journaled my story and turned it into the novel, The Keystone Kid. That process was far from easy, but it was critical in my own recovery. The process helped me get closer to God once it was complete but it took work. It is easier now because of the experience and making sure I do my devotions and spend time alone with God. It is one of the things that is a little disturbing at times, I have learned to address things head on, it is those who encourage me to let the past be the past, to forgive and forget and those types of things that hurts. It hurts because those people are in reality some of the people I have a great deal of love for. I also realize though, that some the abuse, such as the abuse related to finances, the let downs and so forth is something I haven’t addressed as I should.

Over time I have spoken openly about my own abuse and the issue related to it. There has always been those who didn’t want me speaking about it, or even some who questioned the situations I have documented. I wrote as close to memory, with no elaboration, everything I experienced, or at least the things that impacted me. There was liberation in that and while I have been open that some of those things go so far back that I may be a little off in the time and some specifics, I am certain that I am 99%+ correct. None of it was easy; the process wasn’t easy on me, or those around me. I also know the process helped me get to a place I never expected. I still have a long ways to go but the place I am now is beyond where I thought I would ever be and the realization of where I can still yet be is beyond my wildest imagination. If this has been true for me, I can’t help but believe it will also be true for others. My hope and prayer is that maybe, just maybe, this will encourage people to take the journey.

Father thank you for where you have brought me, I pray that I continue to move in the direction you want. I pray this part of the process is something others who need it do. I pray that others who need this start the journaling process. I ask for your Holy Spirit to protect them and give them wisdom and although it will be hard for them, it will also be liberating and worth the effort. I ask that you do these things, starting today,

Behold, You desire truth in the innermost being. And in the hidden part You will make me know wisdom. Purify me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. ~ Psalm 51: 6-7

If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. ~ 1st John 1: 8, 9

This Fathers Day, Next Mothers Day

I used to despise Fathers Day for a number of reasons, mainly; I never knew what it was like to have a father. A couple of years ago Lisa Baker wrote a story about me that was used as a Father’s Day feature in Dr. Charles Stanley’s In Touch Magazine. Prior to the publication of that article, I had learned to appreciate Fathers Day.

This year I approach the day a little differently. I won’t go into a ton of detail as to why, just that with a granddaughter, and a grandson due any day now, I realize I have learned quite a bit over the years and there are things I wish I had known over the years.

Growing up without a father, I developed a lot of attitudes and opinions. I have come to recognize things that I don’t know if people will appreciate or not, but I know them as truth.

It is a sad that it seems many if not most kids grows up in single parent homes. There seems to be this obsession with children having children and it is an attitude that strays drastically from God’s plan for a family with a mother and a father. As a result, children suffer. As a child gets older, they want to know the truth. I was one of those children. Finding out the truth later in life will cause hardships and poor relationships with those who either withhold the truth, or distort the truth, especially when the child finds out that things weren’t as they had been presented. I wish I didn’t know this from experience in my own life, but I do.

Many will celebrate days like Mothers Day or Fathers Day and celebrate it with joy and the way God intended, a two parent, loving home. Others will observe it in a single parent way, not really in celebration but by trying to ignore it or just observing it. Let me assure you, the observation of a day does not take away the need for the child to celebrate. It was late in my life before I realized this but thankfully, I did.

Here is my question, are you observing these days or celebrating them? I would also ask, are you giving the example of a Godly parent? The Bible is clear in its instruction as to what is and is not a Godly parent. For a parent to attempt to present anything other than a Godly example shortchanges and ultimately hurts the child. If we truly love our children, and want what is best for them, the child has to become the purpose for living. In today’s society, when so many have children for selfish reasons, I can’t help but wonder what the damages are to the children. There are consequences when we go against God’s will. While God does forgive, the forgiveness process includes a call to change behavior; otherwise, we really haven’t sought forgiveness. Even with forgiveness, we must understand, there are consequences both spiritually and literally for our actions.

This Fathers Day, I pray that God will have me love my children in the way he loves us, a forgiving, caring way. I have to remember, it was Jesus who said if I can’t forgive those on earth I see, then he won’t be able to forgive me. He also stated that it is our obligation to forgive another 70 X’s 7. I am grateful that despite my own disagreements and conflicts with my wife, we realized the plan God had for us was greater than our disagreement. I am grateful that over the years we stuck it out for our children. Of course I am not saying every person should stick it out with each other, not every couple is compatible, but every person can, and should love sacrificially their children in the way God planned and instructed. I will say this, even with incompatible individuals, when surrendering to Jesus and his ways, healing and reconciliation is possible. The unwillingness to surrender and selfishness are more times than not, the reason people aren’t willing to surrender to God and continue living in the despair they are in.

What is the intent of this contribution? It is really quite simple, for those that will, pray for the broken homes, many of which exist where a single parent or a grandparent is raising the child alone. Pray that the family will be restored and that God will protect the child from the bitterness that is often displayed in the attitudes of the parents. May the Holy Spirit move parents to love their children in a Godly way by displaying Godly examples in their own behaviors and actions?

I unfortunately live in a world where I see the damages done to children. I have been blessed over the years to speak to high school students and at risk youth. I have worked with those who have raised their children alone, and I have lived the life of never knowing a father, and never knowing what many would call a loving mother. For many years, I prayed that I would know a mother and thankfully I was able to forgive and love my mother prior to her death. There were wasted years, and while my mother tried to be a wonderful grandmother, we didn’t work things out until the last year or so of her life. One of the worst things a person can do is to realize their selfishness hurt a child. Unfortunately I have seen many hurts in children that could have been prevented. I am reminded of Jesus hard words, ‘It is better for one to have a millstone tied around their neck and be thrown into the sea than to hurt a child.’ Those are harsh words, may all of us on this Fathers Day, and the next Mothers Day, do all we can to not hurt our children, but to love them in a way that is mirrored by God’s love for us.

Oh God! I really don’t want to become the thing that I have hated, despised and rejected. Yet, I realize that at times it is easy to find myself sinking back to that place. It is easy for whatever reason to become the abuser to others in my attitude and in my actions. As much as I have over the years worked at this, I realize it is still easy to fall into that place if I don’t keep working at it, I will quickly become the thing I hate.

The truth is, at times, bitterness and anger have dominated my attitude. While I realize why, it doesn’t change how others see me. I also realize that at times, it has been easy for pride to sink in. I honestly believe that over the last number of years, I have willingly worked at making improvements, but also realized, I have a ways to go. It is imperative that I continue to work on issues that may resemble pride, including not even giving the appearance of pride.

I also realize that many, who abuse has taken on this attitude, even when they in fact have gone through abuse, can stop their behavior. I realized that regarding the abuse in my life. I made the decision to put my foot down and stand for my Jesus and those he loved despite the situations that had existed in my past. The issues that made me who I was in part, would not be known by my children. While I would tell them and others of my past, I wouldn’t have them experiencing the things I did. I controlled my situation. I say this because to the abuser who is lonely because of the reality they are in as an abuser, you don’t have to give in to impact of the abuse, hatred, and dogma’s that often times comes out of your religious experience. You can, let go, stomp down, and move on in the direction where you can meet and know Jesus for who he is as opposed to who you have been told he is. There is freedom and liberation in that. Is the process easy? Heck no! It is possible though, and if working on it daily, you will see improvement.

Father, today I pray for you to continue to help me move forward and be more like you. I pray for others though, may they realize their own dogmas, their own abuses, may they represent you. I pray for their liberty, freedom, and ability to move forward, it isn’t easy, and that is why I know I continue to need you. Thank you for being there for me so please be there for others as well.

(19) People's desires make them give in to immoral ways, filthy thoughts, and shameful deeds. (20) They worship idols, practice witchcraft, hate others, and are hard to get along with. People become jealous, angry, and selfish. They not only argue and cause trouble, but they are (21) envious. They get drunk, carry on at wild parties, and do other evil things as well. I told you before, and I am telling you again: No one who does these things will share in the blessings of God's kingdom.

(22) God's Spirit makes us loving, happy, peaceful, patient, kind, good, faithful, (23) gentle, and self-controlled. There is no law against behaving in any of these ways. (24) And because we belong to Christ Jesus, we have killed our selfish feelings and desires. (25) God's Spirit has given us life, and so we should follow the Spirit. (26) But don't be conceited or make others jealous by claiming to be better than they are. ~ Galatians 5:19-26

Daily Journal for The Recovery From Religious Abuse Day 47

Today starts a new day; I realize that I have been abused by religion. It took me through Day 8, 9 before I realized this, but I am glad I did. You can go back to see my comments on Day 8 and 9 to see what I am speaking of. I am taking the time to do the exercises as outlined in the book; Recovering From Religious Abuse, 11 Steps to Spiritual Freedom written by: Jack Watts. While I know that hurt and abuse as described and presented in the book are two different things, I have come to the understanding that in regards to taking advantage of me I have in fact been abused. I will admit, one of my greatest concerns is I may have at times abused religion. I don’t think I have but this journey will help me understand where I am at and in the process help others as I journal each day with the steps outlined in the book.

In today’s process I am to look at my attitude of sometimes wanting to taking vengeance or getting even with those who done me wrong. While I recognized a long time ago this typically leads to more problems, I also recognize it is easy to fall back into this area. I need to be reminded that more times than not, heartache, and difficulties come about by trying to do the things that only God can rightly do.

I am doing better in this area, but today, for some reason, while doing the reading another area came to mind. Those who abuse me, only have power over me if I give them power. If I realize that I have the ability to not accept the abuse, then I control the situation and won’t have the desire to get even. It is time I realize, I can control, along with God’s help, my situation, feelings and emotions. The times I have tried to get even gives too much attention to those who have tried to impact me. I have also learned that no response normally generates less response from those who would abuse.

Father today, I ask you to remind me that I can control the way I respond to abusers. Help me understand that I have the power and ability to ignore, move on, and be the person you want me to be. I continue to also pray for those who abuse, I can think of specific persons in my life, and while I realize they may not realize their acts of abuse, I do. I pray they will have the spirit and attitude of Christ. I also pray that I can love them despite their actions. Help me understand, in many ways, I am no different than they. Where I have sinned and tried to have power over others, forgive me. Help me serve rather than boss around. Help me be your witness as opposed to trying to take on your responsibility of judgment and retribution.

Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary. ~ Galatians 6: 7-9

He who does wrong will receive the consequences of the wrong which he has done, and that without partiality. ~ Colossians 3:25

Today I pray for those who have done me, and/or others wrong.

Father I ask first and foremost that my prayer does not appear to be a self-righteous or pious prayer. I realize my own sins, my failures, abuses and inappropriate treatments, thoughts, and actions towards others. I am no better than those I pray for.

Today Father I ask that you help me see and have mercy on those who have done me and others wrong. I realize that something has occurred in their lives that have caused them to see others the way they do. Whatever it is that has for some, driven them away from your loving ways, heal, touch and bring a fresh memory of what you did for them. Father, I ask that for me, and those reading this prayer today that know you, that you would keep your love, your mercy, and your grace real and fresh in our lives. Help us realize that we are all individuals who have been born into sin, and in reality are no more deserving of your grace than the next person, yet, you love us.

Father, I ask that you will keep fresh in my mind the reason I need your grace, but in keeping that memory alive, I ask that I not lose site of your desire to draw people to you through your love, grace, mercy and compassion. Just as I can’t get dogs to come to me when yelling at them, I don’t think many will be drawn to you when being yelled at or abused. Help us all be the witnesses you want us to.

Lord over the years there are those who have done me wrong in many ways, I know that, you know that. I ask that I will have a better understanding of their reasoning, not to judge them, but so I can better share love with them, and better understand their own pain. Help me be a witness to your ways, your will, and your mercy. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

A passage for us all to think about as we pray for those who have done us wrong.

Two men went to the Temple to pray. One was a Pharisee, and the other was a despised tax collector. The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed this prayer” “I thank you, God, that I am not a sinner and like everyone else. For I don’t cheat, I don’t sin and I don’t commit adultery. I’m certainly not like that tax collector! I fast twice a week, and I give you a tenth of my income.”

But the tax collector stood at a distance and dared not even lift his eyes to heaven as he prayed. Instead, he beat his chest in sorrow saying, “O God, be merciful to me, for I am a sinner.” I tell you, this sinner, not the Pharisee, returned home justified before God. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted. ~ Luke 18: 10-14

Today starts a new day; I realize that I have been abused by religion. It took me through Day 8, 9 before I realized this, but I am glad I did. You can go back to see my comments on Day 8 and 9 to see what I am speaking of. I am taking the time to do the exercises as outlined in the book; Recovering From Religious Abuse, 11 Steps to Spiritual Freedom written by: Jack Watts. While I know that hurt and abuse as described and presented in the book are two different things, I have come to the understanding that in regards to taking advantage of me I have in fact been abused. I will admit, one of my greatest concerns is I may have at times abused religion. I don’t think I have but this journey will help me understand where I am at and in the process help others as I journal each day with the steps outlined in the book.

For those that don’t know, I am actually ahead a few posts on my journal entries, what I mean by that is that by the time I post this entry I will be several days past this entry in real time. It is quite interesting to see what happens between the time I post an entry and the time I write it. That is especially true for today’s posting.

I am at the place where as a part of my reconciliation process I need to write a couple of folks to inform them of my hurt, and to offer my forgiveness for the way I have felt towards them. It is ironic because it is people I have trusted and valued over the years, and people I didn’t think would ever hurt me. These are folks I thought understood me and what I do. I don’t know if I am hurt unjustly or if it is a condition of the years of this type of behavior. I honestly don’t think I would respond to them in the same way, at least I hope and pray not. It may not seem like a big thing, but for me it has been, but again, I don’t know if it is due to an unrealistic expectation from me or not.

Here is what I do know, I can’t blame God for either my lack of communication and/or needs, or because of how others respond to my requests or my needs. I have done well in the past at not blaming God, I have to wonder though, is it right to blame others. I just don’t know. It is the pain of going through the experiences I have in life; I really can’t trust hardly anyone with the exception of God. While I have learned that, I think I still have a ways to go. I have to let go of the pains, and let God heal, and direct. In that free-will I have spoken about before, I am also aware and really believe with my whole, that people often reject the call of God. God can come through, I can’t explain it, but I have to also hold out hope.

God as I write this I don’t know how others are going to respond when I contact them. Help me let go of any wrong feelings towards them, but more importantly, help me understand and realize, you are my hope, it is you, and you alone whom I should place my hope, my trust and my life in. Help me understand the fullness of that.

Today I continue to reflect on yesterday. I must continue to take steps to make things right in regards to my relationship with others. I have tried to do that over the years, and in some situations succeeded. I guess I struggle in a couple of areas though regarding making amends. I realize that I have the responsibility to make things right with those I have wronged. I also have the obligation to forgive. I have tried to do that for several years, but if I am honest, I have to admit and confess some issues where I have failed.

One of the issues I have is staying at the place I can forgive. I find that at times things happen, either something someone says or does, or situations or places I am in cause me for the lack of a better word, to backslide. I find myself letting go of anger, then later on, getting angry again at the same person. I recognize the need of me to quit trying to do it, and let Christ through His Holy Spirit help me in forgiving others. I can’t do it on my own. I recognize my need to forgive and let go, to not hold on to grudges, to not go back to the place of being angry or being inappropriate with another person.

One of the hard things for me to recognize is this really is a journey, while I may take a couple of steps forward, it isn’t unusual to find myself taking a step back. I need God to remind me of not where I am at, but where I used to be. I need to see and recognize the progress I make with God’s help. I need to keep my eyes on Jesus as I progress, not keep looking back. When I find myself falling back, start over from that point and move on.

God help me move forward, to let go, where I hold on to grudges, anger, pride or any type of sin related to my attitude, help me let it go. I can’t expect people to love and accept me, if I can’t love and accept them, no matter who they are, where they are at, or what they have done.

Treat others the same way you want them to treat you. ~ Luke 6:31

Don’t sin by letting anger control you. “Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry, for anger gives a foothold to the devil.

If you are a thief, quite stealing. Instead use your hands for good hard work, and then give generously to others in need. Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.

And do not bring sorrow to God’s Holy Spirit by the way you live. Remember, he has identified you as his own, guaranteeing that you will be saved on the day of redemption. ~ Ephesians 4: 26-30

I will admit, one of my greatest concerns is I may have at times abused religion. I don’t think I have but this journey will help me understand where I am at and in the process help others as I journal each day with the steps outlined in the book.

As I have been going through the journal process I have been able to pretty much do, and post every aspect of the process, that is with the exception of today. To maintain the confidence of those I have done wrong, I will leave names out. I know there are those I have wrong to due to my abuse. I have and will continue to try and make amends with them because it is what God expects of me. Unfortunately, many of those were also victims; it doesn’t make the process any easier.

Today I also think about those who continue to do me harm, continue to be critical, and continue to care about all of their issues, without ever taking into consideration the issues and experiences I have gone through. I would hope for a little joy regarding my own recovery, instead I seem to get the opposite. It is one of the reasons it is so easy to isolate and not trust. To think that I may have perpetuated this type of attitude on others as a result of how I have responded to my own abuse is troubling. I find myself asking God to remove whole blocks of memory, he doesn’t though. I have to learn the importance of coming together in community with those God has commanded me to love. It isn’t the lovable I love that is a witness to my relationship with God, it is my willingness, and my efforts to love the hard to love, those who have, and will continue to hurt me that my witness is displayed.

Today, I struggle; I struggle because trying to do things Gods’ way is not easy, in fact, not only is it difficult, it is difficult trying to figure out which thing I do first.

God, help me forgive those I need to, help me to know what to do. I also ask that in my own struggles I don’t forget those I have hurt. While others may not be willing to do right by me, I ask that you will motivate and move me to do right by others. Help me to not only forgive, but to seek forgiveness in areas I need to.

Dear Children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions. ~ 1st John 3:18

If you are presenting your offering at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your offering there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and present your offering. ~ Matthew 5: 23, 24

For most of my Christian life I have felt that God was there, and He was, but I haven’t reflected much on the beatitude in the Sermon on the Mount that says: “The pure of heart will see God.” ~ Matthew 5:8

I have tried to seek God’s heart and desires in my life. I know that more times than not I have done so with an impure heart. I have had anger, frustration, doubt and more in my life. Recently I have seen that in regards to a speaking tour I am working on. I have two churches that are critical to me being able to take this tour. I’ll be honest; I haven’t had peace because I haven’t heard back from these churches despite several emails, a phone call and messages at Facebook. While it may not be a big deal to some, it is huge for me. I have been stressed out and hurt by the lack of response. In the whole thing, I haven’t been able to fully understand God because I don’t know if my heart has been pure in loving and in trying to understand and on and on.

I realize, God wants me to find my favor with Him alone. While God certainly uses people and situations to accomplish His purpose, He wants me to understand, it is still He who is known as Jehovah Jireh, my provider.

It is only in God that I will find peace from the abuse, the situations I am in, my future, and my entirety. It is God I have to rely on. People will fail, whether they intend to or not. In my belief in free-will, I have to keep my focus on the eternal things God has for me, not the temporary things of this earth.

God, help me see your hand in my life; help me live a life that is pure. When I fail, have your Holy Spirit give me wisdom. Bug me until I surrender. I ask that your angels will protect me from the subtle attacks and discouragement. Help me find joy in You and help me follow Your example in all ways, not just a few.

Brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worth of praise, dwell on these things. The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you. ~ Philippians 4: 8, 9

Daily Journal for The Recovery From Religious Abuse Day 39

Today starts a new day; I realize that I have been abused by religion. It took me through Day 8, 9 before I realized this, but I am glad I did. You can go back to see my comments on Day 8 and 9 to see what I am speaking of. I am taking the time to do the exercises as outlined in the book; Recovering From Religious Abuse, 11 Steps to Spiritual Freedom written by: Jack Watts. While I know that hurt and abuse as described and presented in the book are two different things, I have come to the understanding that in regards to taking advantage of me I have in fact been abused. I will admit, one of my greatest concerns is I may have at times abused religion. I don’t think I have but this journey will help me understand where I am at and in the process help others as I journal each day with the steps outlined in the book.

Today I realize my own need to let go of the pain others have passed on to me. I know God doesn’t want me at the place of distress but I have let things fester over the years regarding those who have hurt me. I have such a desire to be appreciated, to be liked, that I grieve, hurt, and stress more than I should. Even today there are things that have me stressing and hurting. I have to let go and experience the freedom and healing God has for me.

While not required in the journal, I am going to do something different. I am going to contact those who have hurt me, explain my hurt, and ask them to forgive me for holding grudges. I need to release them and free myself from the pain I have experienced. I have lived many years after my abuse, it will take time but I start the journey of forgiving today, one by one. I have done that for some who have sought it but I haven’t done it for all. I need to be clear, concise, and to the point. I need to let go knowing that I have done what God requires of me. At this point, I will be able to better receive what God has for me.

My God, my Father, you are the King of Kings, the Creator of the universe. I have no need to in the tough times I am in nor have the pain others have inflicted on me be bring me down or keep me down. God you know the truth, I know the truth, unfortunately when others perceive to know the truth without speaking to me or checking the facts, that is their problem, give clarity and let your truth stand. God you are big enough, strong enough, and powerful enough to deliver and know what is best for me. Let your truth stand. Father, help me let go to experience the freedom and liberty you have for me. Help me to forgive and move on.

I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. ~ Romans: 8: 38, 39

See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God; and such we are. For this reason the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. ~ 1 John 3:1

I will admit, one of my greatest concerns is I may have at times abused religion. I don’t think I have but this journey will help me understand where I am at and in the process help others as I journal each day with the steps outlined in the book.

Over the years of my own recovery, I am confident of a number of things, my ongoing relationship with God, including prayer, where I converse with Him on a regular basis has been critical. I can say emphatically, not to brag or lift myself up, but as a statement of fact, I speak to God daily. Those conversations with God are not simple things like a prayer before a meal or something of the sort; I have learned how to apply the words of Paul, where I am admonished, as we all are, to pray without ceasing. I have learned that having access to God, in all situations, whether joyous, or sad, to express needs, or to offer praise, is something that keeps me going.

There are those who continue their desire to hurt me or be critical of me, but I don’t think they understand, I have found peace with God. There may be moments of difficulty but I can go to God. I am confident that applying the attitudes and actions of Jesus in my life takes me a long ways, when speaking to God on a regular basis. I am aware that others pray but they may use other means as their measuring tool, the institutional church, flag, country, denomination, co-workers, family and I could go on. Talking with God, studying the person of Jesus along with scripture has assured me, I can’t emphasize enough the peace I have experienced, even when others think I am loopy or crazy because of prayer.

Over the years I did a great deal of research on prayer. A number of great prayer warriors have written wonderful works, from Ravenhill to Spurgeon, there is a great deal of wonderful teaching. As a result of my studies I did a lengthy presentation titled, Prayer as a Prelude to Revival. I am confident that message was from God. I am grateful that I have a relationship with God where I can speak to Him anytime, even those times when those who say they love the church, appear to hate anyone or anything that disagrees with their perspective and includes me in their dogmas.

Father, help me to maintain that relationship with you. Help me realize you are my sustainment. You are my Father who loves and guides, but you also heal and provide. My prayer Lord is that others will experience a relationship where they can feel the healing you have provided, and the relationship you desire.
